Hi guys,

MA History + CELTA + DELTA + PhD Applied Linguistics + 13 years EFL experience (2 years in Saudi Arabia)

What could I expect in Dubai in terms of salary, education allowance, accomadation etc?

Just do a search here using "include all terms." Dubai benefits and salaries are a well-trodden path of information, as are the names of the colleges offering acceptable compensation: American U of Sharjah, Higher Colleges, Zayed U and one or two others.

Er....I know I'm a spelling Nazi, but why would a Ph.D. in linguistics misspell "accommodation"? Hope you don't do that on your applications.

Not directed to anyone in particular, but I've always heard that:

PhD="piled high and deep"

I mean, has anyone ever read those dissertations?

Hey Meyanga... I suggest the Firefox browser which gives you a spell checker all the time, and catches those mistakes for you... I almost always spell accommodation wrong if I don't stop and think about it. Laughing

And yes, most dissertation topics are pretty useless whether for MAs or PhDs, but we all do what we have to do to get ahead in our field. Cool

But, on to try to answer your questions. First off, don't restrict yourself to Dubai. You can't if you apply to HCT or ZU, as they put you in the city where they need you. If you are teaching general EFL, the PhD doesn't give you much of a bump in salary. I would guess that you are looking at 15-20,000 DHs depending on employer. (maybe more if you offer some specific experience that an employer is looking for) That's a big range because we don't encounter many with your credentials... thus the "guess." Housing is normally provided... usually a flat... furniture allowance... tickets each year (normally contracts are 3 years)... most parents with more than one child say that the education allowance doesn't cover all the tuition... gratuity... health coverage.

I think you should definitely attend TESOLArabia.

Thanks for the info VS and the other two can shut up and go play with the buses. Amazing that people actually take the time to write negative crap like that. A spelling mistake - whoopdeedo - this is a forum not a PhD thesis, but, oh yeah, what would it matter if it was, PhDs are a load of crap too. Rolling Eyes

Anyway, to those of you with any advice/info...

Does anyone know which countries a wife can sponsor a husband's visa? We are currently here in KSA where it is no problem and my husband works freelance, also with no problems.

I have been told that in Oman, Kuwait and Qatar a wife can not sponsor her husband - is this correct?

Would it be possible in UAE, Bahrain, Egypt, Lebanon or Syria? Is working freelance an issue in any of those places for my husband?

No problem for you to sponsor your husband here (UAE) and he should be able to work here too on your sponsorship. Can't comment on the other places.

RE salary the latest offers from HCT seem to be between 18,000 - 20,000 and with a Phd ZU may also be a better choice.

I have several ex-HCT colleagues who are now happily ensconced at ZU - out of curiousity I looked at the career opportunities at HCT - it's getting longer than the 89 positions (and that's just job titles - they may need someone for the same position at 10 different campuses) really starting to look bad.
