Hi all, I've been offered work teaching to a company, and they have requested that I provide them with official receipts for the work/expense, but I'm unfamiliar with this process....I currently work part time with a school and my working visa is in application, but with this company i would be working directly for them.
I think with the new version of the visa this doesn't limit me to just working for the school but I can also be "self-employed" too, is this correct? And how do I go about obtaining receipts? and can all this be done while my visa is still in the application stage?
many thanks in advance!

It's a little complicated. If you know someone who has a business and can lend you a recibo while you get yours sorted out, that really helps. As long as it's the same kind of business it should be ok.

I think most of the registration is done online on the SAT website. It depends on the state but here (SLP) it was one trip to hacienda to register then the rest on line. You then go to an official printers to have your receipts printed up. You'll need to declare taxes every month. To do this you need an accountant - even better an accountant that can walk you through this process. It's a little daunting but worth it for the flexibility is gives you. You will need your visa and some kind of letter/proof that you're qualified to do what you do.

If only the school is sponsoring your visa, you will only be authorized to work for the school. If you request authorization to work independently as an English teacher and are granted authorization, however, you will be able to work independently. I just consulted my lawyer, who told me that nothing has changed in this regard.

I'm in Mexico City, by the way.

Enchilada is right in that you might want to look for someone with a related activity to lend you a recibo for the time being. Sometimes people charge for this, though, so don't be surprised.

SpaceTone, it's a little more involved than you think. To give them recibos de honorarios, you'll need to be registered with Hacienda as a persona fisica and in order to do this you need to have an independent working visa through immigration, which it sounds like you're not getting as you're working with the school.

You're probably not going to be able to offer the company invoices in your name for awhile.

It's even a little more complicated than that now. You need to get an electronic signature through Hacienda and then find an accountant who will handle your electronic invoicing. Paper invoices are no longer issued, as of the beginning of this year. If you have some that were printed last year or before, you can use them up or continue to use them until their 2-year expiration date. And from that point on you'll need electronic invoicing.

I didn't realise it was already in place. I still have a wodge of recibos to get through though. That's a lot of printers out of business, isn't it? Are you using the new electronic ones, mejms?

I still have a lot, too. On the up side, I'm guessing this new move will make it a lot easier for me to invoice my clients. How are the new recibos submitted to clients?

No, I'm not. I got new recibos in September, as my old ones expired at that time. So I'm fine until September 2012.

I don't see how it will be any easier for us, unless you file your own taxes every month. It should be considerably more efficient for our accountants however. I went in for my FIEL (firma electronica) last week, and I was impressed how Hacienda had some more modern equipment in place. Looks like immigration and Hacienda are making some progress Shocked

I don't know anything more about the use of electronic invoicing. I'll cross that road when I come to it in a year and a half. I'll need to trust my accountant considerably too.

It's not necessary to use electronic invoicing unless your income is more than $4m p.a. (which I doubt!), you can continue using old-fashioned receipts or invoices.

I don't understand what you mean by "$4m p.a.", Phil. Please explain. Thanks!

I read it as four million dollars Per Annum, or per Year for the latin-challenged.

Since we're talking about income earned in Mexico, it probably means four million pesos a year, not dollars.

Thanks for the info. So that was why I had to go for the FIEL a few months ago. I was so surprised how quick it was; it only took about 10 minutes (waiting and all).

The printers in Oaxaca staged a protest outside the SAT offices at the end of the year.

Yeah, exactly as explained earlier - $4 million pesos a year.

Currently this is true, but as of Jan. 1, 2011, the next time you get new invoices, they will have to be electronic-enabled or whatever this new thing is, as mejms mentioned above. So by the end of 2012, we will all be using them.
