Hello
I've just started to look into teaching in Vietnam for my next position. I've previously worked in Korea and Taiwan.
I wonder first if there are some good links to be pointed towards for general information about the industry and jobs in Vietnam
I have two years experience and all the qualifications. I'm from the U.K. So I expect I should be able to find a job. Ideally I'd like to work in a private public school (I believe its not legal to work in an actual public institution?) Mainly for prospective paid holidays and not having to work evenings, which I feel cuts into the day too much, and doesn't allow time for privates.
Standard question - what are the living conditions like and is it easy to save? (In Taiwan the answer to this is a resounding NO! frugal lifestyle or not)
Is it possible to do this?
Also Hanoi or HCMC?
Thanks in advance, I really appreciate anyone taking a little time to help me out |

When you say experience and qualifications, do you mean ESL? What does "all the qualifications" mean? Are we talking BA or MA? CELTA or DELTA? TESOL or PGCE?
There are several international schools here in HCMC, and dozens more "international" schools. You're not likely to get work at the former without a real teaching qualification.
To be honest, I think you're setting your sights a little high (without knowing specifically what qualifications you're talking about) with regard to the "no evenings, no weekends" aspirations. These are standard requirements for the majority of teachers here. Two years of teaching in Taiwan and Korea isn't really going to separate you from the hordes, but once you have a job you can angle your way into better schedules, if you have the chops and if you're a charmer.
But nonetheless, it is possible to save some money, depending on your lifestyle. If you get a job at one of the better mills, you can expect to earn around $14-1500 net. Depending on how much you like to eat and drink, I'd say that monthly savings of $500 is very achievable.
Living conditions are as good as you want them to be. The simple act of getting and staying away from the Pham Ngu Lao area of Saigon will improve your quality of life 100%. |
