I have started trying to figure out the visa process.

The easy way seems to be to google for "taiwan visa" and find a commercial service which offers to get a visa for about $200. It's not clear whether such visas are extensible. No HIV test is mentioned: presumably they draw some blood when you get off the plane.

Examples:
http://www.passportexpress.com/default.aspx?page=show_visa&action=Taiwan

http://www.passportsandvisas.com/visas/visa2.asp

A possible risk of such services is that I might get a 60-day visa, extensible to 180 days total, but the schools in Taiwan might be hesitant to extend that visa.

The harder way seems to be to find a school which teaches Mandarin, get accepted, and get them to sponsor your visa. One such offer is at:
http://www.studyabroadinternational.com/Taiwan/Taichung/Taiwan_Taichung.html

That mentions a glorious list of paperwork which is "required" and adds, as an afterthought, that the requirements are a guideline.

This would be a lot less annoying if they explained exactly how one is supposed to get one's HIV test certified. Many labs will do a test but will not issue certificates.

I believe that some previous posters have written words to the effect of, "Do your homework and get a multiple-entry visa." I am trying to do my homework by calling the Taiwan consulate, but the personnel there do not seem to be very informative. I am also looking on the web, but the process seems to be highly obscure and complicated.

If anyone has any comments or advice, I would be interested to read them.

Have your travel agent apply for your visa. Tell them you want a multiple entry visa for business purposes.
Here's how.

It may also be beneficial for you to take a look at this.

for the bank balance, you could do what I did: get a cash advance on your credit card, deposit it in your account, get the bank to print out the balance, remove the money and put it back on your credit card again.

I must say, this is ingenious! It probably works in other countries too. I will save and archive this post, as I may have to do that if I want to teach in Thailand.
