Do you know if Beirut is tax free for foreigners working in academia there?

If you are a US citizen which I infer from your location you are - you are tax free up to USD90,000 anywhere (so long as you include benefits - this limit may have changed since my last discussion with a US poster).

Otherwise, you are taxable no matter where you are - check anonymously with the IRS.

I believe that alinyusa means Lebanese taxes. I suspect that, like Egypt, there are local income taxes since this is not an oil country. Many major employers of expats in education take care of taxes for you. At least that is what AUC in Egypt did. They paid the taxes and we didn't have to file anything. But, you would need to check with any employers that offer you a job.

The other side of the tax equation (Lebanese) didn't occur to me - guess I'm obsessed with the "home country's" talons (not necessarily the USA)

No... you didn't read carefully. There will most likely be Lebanese taxes. You would need to check with your employer as to whether they will assist with this.
