I've been reading over this forum for a while and looking for any and all advice for a female EFL teacher in Saudi. I'm considering applying for Saudi and a few other places in the Middle East.

Yes, I know how to use the Search button (and have)... but sometimes the commentary here gets a tad tangential. oh just a tad...

So I came across a college Dean in Saudi who only needed males, but he did offer me the following info and I thought I'd share it for those females looking for a detailed starter list of places hiring females.

Sorry if there is any invalid info here- I haven't written to all of these places. If anyone wants to add to or confirm the list below, please do. I was hoping for a helpful list like this upfront when contemplating going through a recruiter or not, so....

Director, English Program
King Faisal University
P. O. Box 1982
Dammam, Saudi Arabia

King Faisal University employs women teachers in the English Language
Program preparing students for medical studies and other majors. Another
university you may write to is King Abdulaziz University, where they have an
English Language Program for their female medical students. Their contact
information is:

Director, English Language Center
King Abdulaziz University
P. O. Box 1540
Jeddah, Saudi Arabia

Still another university you could write to is King Saud University. Their
contact information is:

Dean, King Saud University
College of Arts
P.O. Box 2456
Riyadh, Saudi Arabia

At King Fahd University of Petroleum & Minerals, the University Schools
employ women; their contact information is:

University Schools
KFUPM Box 5080
Dhahran 31261
Saudi Arabia

Another institution you may try is the Institute of Public Administration.
Their contact information is:

Director General (Women's Branch)
Institute of Public Administration
P.O. Box 205
Riyadh 11141
Saudi Arabia

You may also write to the Saudi Arabian Cultural Mission office to inquire
about other programs. Their contact information is:

Suite 800
Washington DC 20037
Tel: 202-337-9450/Fax: 202-337-2978

Saudi Arabian Educational Mission

Saudi Arabian Cultural Bureau

Tel: 207-245-9944/5/6/7/FAX: 207-245-9895

For more sites for universities and colleges in Saudi Arabia, please visit
the Internet site: www.kacst.edu.sa.

I hope the above information will be useful in helping you find a teaching
position in Saudi Arabia.

You might also write to the following in the United Arab Emirates:
The Higher Colleges of Technology

United Arab Emirates University
_____________

ps: Any females currently (or previously) working in Saudi or other parts of the Middle East are totally welcome to PM me with any further advice, experiences, or general reflections. If you would like to add to the above list... it would be appreciated, I'm sure.

I have taught in a couple of other countries and have an MA in TESOL and over 10 yrs of USA high school teaching experience... pretty much nothing with adults though. I'd love to experience the Middle East... but only at a college or university. Again, any advice or suggestions are welcome.

Thanks!

Dear bayarea7m,

That's a very nice list, and it will probably be helpful to some.

However, I'd recommend looking into the UAE (cash) or Oman (culture,) rather than Saudi.

WIth rare exceptions, the Kingdom is really no country for old or young women.

Hope you find a decent, well-paying job in a comfortable environment.

Regards,
John

I believe that some of those listed above do not direct hire, but have passed their hiring on to recruiters. There are also private universities that direct hire women. If I were looking for work in any country, the last place that I would call would be the embassies... but after a few years overseas, one learns to not count on any of them for anything - including our own. Personally, as a woman, I would go to the rest of the Gulf... Saudi would be the last choice.

In the UAE, unsolicited CVs normally end up in the bin. All of the good employers there... AUS, UAEU, HCT, ZU, etc... list their openings on their websites and take their applications online.

Oman has mostly recruiter based hiring other than SQU and a few of the smaller private colleges like UoN and MCBS. The recruiters are running constant ads and hire through the year.

For applicants that need further contact information... google is your friend. Laughing

I don't know anybody who sends job applications to educational institutions by snail mail, so all those mailing addresses are useless. You should have included the websites in your list. But then again, the names of the universities suffice, and if one is so inclined, they should be able to find the websites in their own.

The western women I know in Saudi Arabia are not teachers. Those living in nice compounds with regular shopping busses to the shopping malls find life very satisfactory.
