Hi,
In an attempt to gather as many documents for a work permit before leaving the States for Vietnam, I am trying to get my criminal background check done and notarized by all the proper people. Here's my problem:
I've heard from many sources that you only need to go down to your local sheriff's office to get a check done.
BUT I have also heard that you then must get the background check notarized by Clerk of Superior Court, THEN by the Secretary of State.
This document that they gave me, after I paid $20 for a criminal background check at my local sheriff's office, is apparently "un-notarizable," period. I am now being told I have to have a FBI background check done for anyone at all to notarize it in any way, shape, or form. Meanwhile, I can't get through to any of the FBI or criminal background check offices in my state because they are all so terribly understaffed... all I'm getting are busy signals and "mailbox full."
What has worked for people in the past who have gotten a criminal background check as part of your work permit process??

I did the same except that I started with the City Police, made sure that it was done on stationary with the City letterhead, then off to the state, then off to the feds, then off to the VN Consulate, then a few more steps after I got here.
My Insurance carrier was the one to notarize it but no snags in the process.
That was about 7 years ago. Maybe some of the requirements have changed. I've heard from a couple of people that went straight to the FBI for the B. Check and they've had success in getting WP's with it. Maybe this is a option for you. What state are you from? |

Like many other things in Vietnam, if you ask 10 different people you are going to get 10 different answers.
I just went to the local city Police Department in Texas and after a few days, picked it up for $5. It had the city letterhead on it, but I didn't get it notarized by any other agencies. Fortunately, it was enough to get my work permit. |

Check the Korean job forums. They have info on the E-2 regulations. If you do a search for "FBI CBC", you should find something helpful. (You do need the FBI check now.)

Here is some info I copied from one of the stickies:

I'm going through this now, so I'd like to offer what I have found through phone calls to the FBI and talking to the office in my state that issues apostilles (this is for Americans). I'm renewing for the third year and I need to submit both my apostilled diploma copy and my apostilled FBI check because my visa expires after 1/1/2011.
An FBI check can be done from here, but give yourself a lot of time (like 12 weeks) and plan to spend a bit of money sending things FedEx because you want to be able to track it! http://www.fbi.gov/about-us/cjis/background-checks/background_checks has all the forms you will need. There are links on the right side of the page. Make a few copies of the Standard Fingerprint Form to take with you to get fingerprinted in case one of them gets smudged. I went to a police station here and they did the prints for free.
The above website also contains the address of where you need to send the fingerprints and application once you have completed them. It is suggested to send them FedEx or DHL so that you can track them. Also, make sure to request that the copy of your background check is authenticated by the FBI so that you can send it to the US Dept of State for an apostille. Explicity state this on the application to save yourself the delay.
Obtaining an Apostille on Your FBI Background Check
Once you have received a copy of your background check, it then needs to be forwarded to the US Department of State Office of Authentications. This is the only office that can do it- your FBI check cannot be apostilled at the state level because it is a federal document, so you must mail or hand deliver your document to the Authentications Office. The FBI will not send your background check to another federal office.
