I've done some searches on here and it sounds like you generally don't need to have a criminal history check to get a work permit in China. Is that true?

I ask to be prepared but also because I assumed China would be the country most likely to want a thorough criminal check. You need them for so many other countries.

The government doesn't require it. I've heard that some schools require them, but...

My employer requested one. Only $2 USD and 5 minutes later I was done. No biggie.

Was the $2 USD a quick payoff to your employer? Confused

Two bucks USD for a CBC or police clearance sounds too good to be true, as the FBI check is the standard for Americans and costs $18 and takes up to 12 weeks, you can check the site here:

http://www.fbi.gov/about-us/cjis/background-checks/background_checks

knight4ever please give us more details about your police check sounds like it might be a great way to go if China ever jumps on the CBC bandwagon.

I've read about local police stations in the USA providing background checks but only if you've lived in the same city or town, something like that, not sure maybe others can confirm this.

@ Seamallowance & Time to Teach :

I know the amount sounds crazy and I was surprised when they told me the price. I'm from Florida and we can request a background check from Tallahassee which takes about 2 weeks (usually longer) due to bureaucratic red tape. The contact in Tallahassee said I can go to my local police station and they can pull up a criminal check instantly. Went to the police station near Cape Canaveral and they gave me a signed and notarized document on State letterhead. They said the $2 was for the notarizing fee. I am sure this is out of the ordinary compared to many other places.
