Hi all!
I'm new to the forum and I see that you get a lot of questions like this, but I haven't found any that really answer my specific questions so I'd be really appreciative for everyone's assistance.
I'd like to move to Thailand in the fall to teach English with my husband (who would not be teaching). I'm having difficultly finding a good place to start searching for a position because I'm not entirely sure what my needs and qualifications are at the moment.
I have a BA from an American university in Art History with a minor in Chinese Studies.
I have an MA in Art History from a UK university.
I have a TEFL certification from i-to-i (Not sure what that's really worth. I did it online).
My experience is that I taught English in China in 2008 for a month at a summer school.
I'd be happy to teach art history or English, but I just don't know where to start looking for jobs. Also, I'm not sure if my being married and moving there with my husband complicates things.
ANY advice would be very helpful to me. Thanks a lot! |

options:
ESL/English teacher: your BA and TESOL cert will get you an interview and a "B" visa with work permit. There is no difficulty there. Main stream schools will start their major recruitment drives at the end of Feb with jobs starting May 1st and students returning to school around May 16th.
Language academies are hiring all the time but again, they tend to be busiest (in terms of hiring) in Apr/May and Nov/Oct (regular school term breaks).
You might get into some of the lower tier international schools with the MA but ART HISTORY is not a big subject for teaching. The better "international" schools will require that you have a teaching related degree and/or home country licensing).
As a newbie (with an unrelated MA) going into Thailand you would be looking at a wage in the 35-45k baht range and minimal or no benefits. In BKK it is an OK living wage (month to month but no savings potential). IT isn't bad if you are out in the provinces and the potential for extra work certainly exists.
After you gain a year or two of teaching experience you would certainly be able to find jobs in the 45k-55k baht range and by then you will have also learned how to be comfortable and the savings potential goes up dramatically (to about $600+ per month).
If you have the non-immigrant "B" visa and work permit he will be able to obtain a non immigrant "O" visa and stay with you. As long as you can prove you are married there is no problem obtaining the right visa and (1 year) extensions as required.

MOD EDIT
@ffloyd
If your husband is going to be 'working' from home just be careful with this. ANY kind of work within Thailand requires a Work Permit..............even voluntary work.
Whilst it is unlikely that he will have any problems if kept 'under the radar', the potential consequences of not having a WP can be serious. |

Please stay on topic. If you wish to discuss the "sex industry" in Thailand, please do it on another thread on another site. |
