Does anyone have any information on the school located in Coban? I would like any teacher experiences or general information about Coban. Cost of living, general overview of the town, the people etc.

Teacher experiences from Guatemala City also helpful since I believe they are the same franchise.

I'm an experienced teacher having taught in SA and Asia.

Thanks!

Hey ellecbee,

I lived in Coban for 2 months back in 2008, while doing some volunteer work. I didn't teach at Oxford but I knew most of the teachers there and went there a lot to use the internet. The school is a cool, relaxed place in an old colonial building. It seemed like a nice place to work although I'm not sure of the pay, conditions, etc.

In terms of cost of living, in Coban you can live very cheaply. Can't remember prices exactly but rent, local food/drink is very cheap. The city itself isn't the most ascetically pleasing place, but then again most Guatemalan city are this way. The big bonus is you'll be close to Semuc Champey and Lanquin which are beautiful rock pools and caves a few hours away. I great way to relax on the weekend and escape the city.

If you're looking for a very 'Guatemalan' experience away from the gringo trail it's a good place to live.
