I'm thinking of going to Aussie to teach. I'd like someone to help me by comparing the requirements of ESL teachers in Aus to those of EFL teachers in Taiwan/Asia. Are teachers in Aus expected to be entertainers as they are in Taiwan? Or can they just do a good job of teaching and get respected, by (possibly) motivated students? Even if you don't have a teaching degree? Any answers would be much appreciated. |

Why is it one or the other? Can't it be both? I like to think of myself as an entertaining teacher... |

I know now that Aussies wanting to teach ESL in Aust must (although you may find some casual positions) have a teaching degree, preferably a TESOL one. Not too sure about other nationalities. |

You mean a one year university one, or just a CELTA certificate? |

I meant a uni degree, but you may find casual work with just a CELTA. There is also a LOT of private tutors needed in Brisbane; heaps of Korean and Japanese do their language courses there. Teachers I believe are more of the 'teachery' type in Oz, rather than of the 'clown' type, hence the need for top qualifications. |
