Sure, could have problems. But you might be fined less than the cost of the visa. One girl I knew got fined $500 pesos.

Does anyone know the daily overstay fine? I suppose you could do the math...50 pesos per day X 60 days = 3000 pesos. or 100 pesos per day =6000 pesos, vs the cost of renewal. I'm not sure what the fine is...

Check around on the INM website al. There is a daily overstay fee--but there is a cap on it. Many years ago the maximum fine was around 1500--but that was back when the visa it's self cost about that much. The fees go up each year.

If you already have a ticket out of Mexico, proving your intention of leaving INM can also issue you permission for the time between the expiration date of your visa and your departure. I know a person who did this- the but was not authorized to work during that time--sort of a return to tourist status in order to have enough time to see some of the country before leaving.

I know of a woman who did something similar. She went to immigration well ahead of time, and showed them a letter from her school stating that her contract was ending right about the same time as her FM3 was set to expire. She asked for and got a 30-day FMT so that she could play tourist for a few weeks after ending her contract but before leaving Mexico. I can't recall if she had to pay the ~200 pesos for the FMT: I think she did, but that's a lot cheaper than paying a fine.

Makes a lot of sense. I'm sure it's possible.

If you're an American you can always bus, drive or walk across the border and NOBODY will ask for ANY docs on the Mex side. U can also keep ur FM-3 to remember your glory days of EFL Cool

Your advice is not useful to the OP since he mentions that he is flying out of the country.

Don't be so sure that nobody will ask for documents, especially on the Mexican side, and especially these days with all that's going on. Buses are checked at organized Military checkpoints, and not only do they check documents, they check luggage.

As far as keeping the FM3 for a souvenir, that could come back to bite you. It apparently belongs to Mexico, and should be turned in before leaving the country. I had a friend return after 3 years, and Immigration officials discovered at the border that he had an FM3 that hadn't been renewed or cancelled. They were really ticked with him, detained him for awhile, and finally settled on a 5000.00 peso fine. Better to clean up that unfinished business, just in case.

Psssst! al, Houston is Texas.
You'd want a bus to Houston or Dallas, both in Texas.
Possibly, San Antonio or El Paso,
but the big airports are Houston and Dallas.

Looks my info was of plenty good use to the OP Wink

Also, remember that for every poster on here, perhaps hundreds of people read these topics.

I overstayed a tourist visa by three weeks and nobody checked at the airport. I was expecting to be fined and had lots of cash on me, and made sure I got there early in case there was a hassle, but it wasn't an issue.

(note, I do not recommend overstaying one's visa...it just worked out that way, but I wouldn't do it again. The stress was not worth it)

When I left with my FM-3 I tried to hand it over at the airport and they wouldn't take it. I traveled in several times as a tourist after that, and didn't have any trouble.
