Hello all
First I'll lay out my life story, I'm a 25 year old Australian, currently living in Australia, who has an interest in teaching in Indonesia.
My girlfriend is Indonesian, and lives in Jakarta, hence the reason why I want to do it there.
I did a TESOL Certificate two years ago, and passed, but haven't done a CELTA course for it.
I've read posts on here, and it's lead me to believe that I'll be looking at EF jobs due to it. (And with that, read the amazing stories of EF...so...)
On the EF application page it says "Do you have a University Degree?" I don't, but I went to TAFE for 2 years, which is tertiary education, up to an Advance Certificate. Is this going to be a negative when I'm applying?
Would it be best if I applied for the CELTA course provided by TBI?
Thanks in advance, and any questions I'll answer as best I can. |

Hi Lapzod,
Current regulations state that all newly hired English teachers for language schools have to have an English-related degree. While the government doesn't care what type of TEFL certification you have - the CELTA/Trinity is by far the best option if you want to be both employable and get a solid foundation for teaching.
It should be noted that some schools are sticking strictly to the regulations while others are finding their way around them. Feel free to check around but just be a bit wary of schools that are skirting the regulations and you should probably triple check that they can legally hire you and get you a work visa in a reasonable amount of time.
Good luck! |

EF salaries range from 6 million to 10 million. most include housing but some do not, such as the school that pays 10 million. while your girl may be able to stay the occasional night, it might cause problems with either the school or co-workers if u move her in the house. u can get a meager housing allowance that wont allow u to rent anything other than a low end kost. and that is if u can get around the new regulations which seem to get gaining a foothold. DINAS has been having workshops with some nationalplus school and have even visited an international school or 2. not sure what is going on with language mills which are the only schools that u have a small chance of getting employed at. 6-8 million is about 650 to 850 us dollars. barely enough to support yourself and damn near imposssible to have a relationship and go out to dinner or the movies.
with little education and no experience in teaching, surely u can make more money in OZ and have a better quality of life. why not sponsor her to come and live there instead? |

Thanks for the replies!
I wasn't expecting her to be able to stay with me, what this is is more "I'll go over there for a while, then we'll move back here"
I've already approached her about her moving here, but her parents want me to go there first...
She works for a magazine company, and isn't earning much more than what the EF salaries are, so we're both aware that we won't be able to live the "high life"
Thank you for the tips about being wary of the schools, I think having someone there, who speaks the language, will be able to help out with that. |

So after all of this, it looks like I'm getting a job at EF Permata Hijau.
The only thing I'm curious about is that I'm supposed to go in on a tourist visa while they work out my kitas, then leave to singapore for the weekend and come back in.
From what I've read on here, that seems to be the common practice with EF... |

Hi Lapzod,
Congratulations on getting the job.
Any idea how your new school is swinging your work visa as you don't have the degree required by the government? It would be useful to know for others that wanted to find work but don't meet the requirements. |
