Does anyone know what salaries there are like? Say, for a person with an MA and over 10 years of experience in the Gulf.

I am particularly interested in learning this info from people who

1) have worked for them
2) who have friends that have worked for them and told you how much they were paying.
3) who have heard about how much they pay.

Please give a range if you do not know the exact figure.

Note: please do not reply if you do not know or are planning to say : " it depends" or will give a wide range like e.g. between AED 9000- 20,000. Anyone knows that. I mean just a typical salary + what benefits they normally give?

Anything else to say about that institution?

On campus housing which most are satisfied with. Access to excellent sports facilities. A beautiful campus.

The people I know there have been there for 5+ years and show no sign of wanting to move on. I don't know how much they earn, guesstimate based on time in the job between 20 - 25,000

In the past the benefits were well described on their website... along with pictures of the housing. (which hopefully still provide free satellite TV and internet) It has been awhile since I clicked around on it, so I hope it is still there. Salaries are competitive with the rest of the tertiary level, but if you are American, the benefits are unbeatable in the Gulf. They pay into SS and... is it tiaa-cref?

Good Luck getting in there... as Helen says... no one leaves if they can possibly avoid it.

I doubt they offer anywhere near 20-25,000AED. In 2002 their intensive English program offered a lousy AED10,000, and I had two master's degrees and 16 years' experience including 9 years in the Gulf. I am also merely guessing but my guess would be AED15K/mo. unless they got real.

As I said, mine was a guesstimate. However, in 2002 10,000 iswhat HCT was offering just down the road - for competent, experienced EFL teachers (content teachers would have been offered 10 to 30% more than EFL to start at that time). Inflation and competition since 2002 have resulted in higher starting wages and more substatntial wage hikes - as I pointed out, my friends have been there 5+ years hence the 20 - 25k estimate. A newbie, 10 - 20% less?

Are you sure SnB? I was talking to them in 1999 and it was in the 12-13,000 Dh range. At that time, it would have been MA+11 in the ME for me. Perhaps because all of mine was university foundations teaching, mostly writing?

I would guess that they are in the 15-18,000 area for whatever their entry requirements are now. But Mr Romano didn't want us to just speculate. Laughing Unfortunately, we haven't had an AUS TEFL teacher here on the board for a couple years and I have only talked to a professor or two by PM here.

Yup, I interviewed with them in 2002 before taking the Petro Inst. job. AUS was offering a bit over AED 10K. My background had been Foundations for 5 years at DWC, while previous experience included some years of freshman-everything at American univs in Japan and Malaysia. Not to mention 4 years in Saudi.

Oh, I certainly remember that insulting salary. And the shabby way they treated me during and after the interview. It was very obvious that one or two of the women on their panel were hostile to the idea of a new male (in a sharp suit) coming on board. But being hostile was an equal opportunity there, as the male ESL director seemed to dismiss me outright, and never bothered to send even a form rejection letter afterwards. I don't say all this lightly...my experiences with interviews have been as good and bad as the next job seeker. And if you're wondering if I look or behave like a mountain man from Deliverance in person, consider that on the other end of the scale, I placed #1 on desirable hires for my last job, out of 200+ applicants and 70+ interviewed. (That was for the West African oil co. rotation job. I know the rankings because I got hold of the hiring committee's documents after the project manager was fired.)

HCT started me out at 11,000 in 1997. I doubt they were starting people out at 10K in 2002! I dunno--maybe people with just a BA and three years' experience.

I know of 1 EFL teacher who started the same time as I did was offered (and accepted) AED9000 in 2001 - she had a Master's and Far East experience - Confused So not really a direct comparison to your quals

It must have been the suit! Was it pinstriped (and did the outfit include a fedora?) Wink

Interesting how different SnB's experience is from everyone else I have spoken too who worked or interviewed with them. I wonder if someone from HCT put a negative bug in their ear? (or was it the cigar?)

HCT English faculty were being hired with salaries around 17-18,000 in September, depending on how they negotiated. This was the latest round of hires in September - not sure if the budget concerns will drop this amount. It should be comparable for the AUS I would say. Again, sorry, no real idea.

Anything is possible. The EFL then-director at the PI wasn't thrilled with me from the start either, denigrating my publications and so on. I managed to squeeze in probably because they needed a couple of people at the last minute. Hey, I'm not ashamed to say that--happens to a lot of us. Maybe that was a low-karma phase of my life. Things looked up with interviews later.

VS is spot-on about AUS. I've been teaching and living here now for 2 years and I wouldn't give it up for anything in the world. Through this very forum, VS was actually instrumental in helping me decide to come here (thanks VS!). Living at AUS is like living in a garden. Its reputation is growing, as are the facilities on campus. A new business school has just gone up and there are plans for a research park to be built soon enough, along with a K-12 school just outside the gates to cater to faculty kids.

It's no wonder it's very hard to get in here now. Once you're in and keep an active research profile and earn good student evaluations, along with service and generally getting along with colleagues, etc., it's pretty much an unbeatable deal. There are of course pessimists and humbugs who compare everything here to "back home" but that's to be expected in such a diverse community. All in all, you could do a lot worse than AUS, trust me.

One quick add on: cable is extra, but internet is free.
