Hi all,
I have an Android smartphone which I'd like to set up to use VOIP and a SIP server so that my family can call my mobile from the UK and not have to pay through the nose for it.
The setup of the client is relatively straightworward, but it struck me that Japanese carriers might block VOIP packets on their networks.
Does anyone know if DOCOMO block VOIP? |

I'm not sure about DOCOMO, but I use Skype on my iPhone. Actually, if it weren't for Softbank's pake-houdai plan, I'd be paying well over 500,000 JPY/month for sent/received packets.
You should just switch over to Softbank if DOCOMO gives you grief about using VOIP. |

I've just started the contract! :/
I think it's OK - I have a pake-houdai plan and SIPdroid connects to the server, but my parents are have lives so they haven't called me yet to test it...
There's an SIP client in the iPhone appstore; you can set up Google talk so your parents can call you like that - you get a US/Canada number if you use Google Talk. I understand it doesn't thump the battery as much as Skype does. It's a very handy tool! |
