It could ALSO be "Anime geeks need not apply".
OR, it could be that they use it in some sort of promotional material for the school like in the store window- a picture of the exotic foreigner actually IN the far away lands having fun. |

You must be applying to ALS. This is not an answer to your question (I'm sorry), but it may affect you -- ALS posted an ad on Dave's ESL Cafe within the past couple of days about teaching positions in Japan. However, I've tried every way I know how to email them my information and no matter what I've tried, the email keeps bouncing back as undeliverable (I even sent it from a different account). The Cafe site AND the ALS site show
[email protected] as the proper place to send my application to but NOTHING WORKS!! Can anyone help? Are you having success emailing them? Thanks! |

I doubt that "fat" is an issue in the Land of the Samurai. However, check out: http://allaboutals.blogspot.com/ or google "Blacklist: ALS American Language School." There's a VERY englightening article there and it may not matter to either of us anyway after reading THAT! It's a short article but extremely important for you and me to be aware of. |

That is a very strange description of asking for a photo for a job application. They usually ask for a professional pose in business attire (or at least that is what is implied). That is item #3 on your list.
Allowing other people in the photo only confuses the reviewers.
I wouldn't call this a "shallow" attitude. Just weird. Yes, they might be trying to sneak in a whole body picture (some places come right out and ask for one, but not in groups). |

We can only guess what they're interested in, but there certainly is room for them to make shallow assumptions. The standing pose allows them to see not only your weight, but your posture and general full-body attractiveness. The inclusion of friends allows them to make judgments from your social scene. As Gambate says, they might want pictures of us in the wild.
As distasteful as the resume photos are to many of us, things are at least as bad in the US (and I assume most of the other English-speaking countries). It's quite common for employers to Google applicants, look through their social networking sites and overall online presence, and glean whatever they can. There are even companies that offer this service for employers. |

I had a former company ask for pictures of me.
They used the pictures to advertise new teachers to students... promoting us before we even got to japan
Of course, they did tell us that that was what the pictures were for. |

That sounds like a standard background check. If I'm hiring teachers, and your favorite links on your Facebook account includes pictures of 'college girls gone wild', then it is likely to be considered when deciding to hire you (especially for a women only university). |

You might be thinking of sumo instead.

Sometimes heavier teachers are "scarier".
Take it from one who weighs in at 100 Kg. plus and stands over 2 m. |

That's understandable, but they can just as easily use online photos and writing to short-list or disqualify based on looks, race, politics, religion, or other shallow (and typically illegal) reasons. |
