I see that some of you post pictures of yourselves on here, whether on a thread, as an avatar (you know who you are Wink ), or via the "www" with your posts. Do you think it's safe to post pics of yourself on the 'net? I only ask because I hear warnings all the time from people about not posting personal pictures on sites like this. I suppose there is 'some' risk with it, but how big of a risk is it really? Is it any different from having your picture appear in the local newspaper? (Wider exposure but exposure nonetheless.)

Thoughts? Cool

I've had the same thoughts. I wouldn't post any pictures of kids because of the sickos out there, but how much harm would there be in adults? Would someone stalk us? There is something to be said about anonymity though.

Do you mean to say that the lissom beauty wielding the sword is not you, Capergirl?

Crying or Very sad

I might try to post some pics of myself--if i can figure out how to do it. What benefit to humanity it will be is pretty dubious, not for me to say, however.

Maybe Dave should have a webcam site for longterm posters! See teacher get dressed for work, see teacher on bus, see teacher in classroom, see teacher and ss arguing point of grammar, see teacher gnashing teeth, see teacher climbing wall.

I had a colleague in Asia who went mad and locked his ss in the classroom for a day. now that would look good in real time!

I have a total of 2 pics on the web - one is for my msn user profile (and the pic had been in my local newspaper initially anyway), and the other is on a dating site that 'does not support' the right-click function on your mouse (so no one can right-click to steal your picture!) Otherwise, I'm a bit paranoid about it - I used to get creepy messages from probably old men typing in their panties and rubbing themselves in peanut butter Shocked

I think leby26 has it right, your only real danger is unwanted attention. Personally, I don't post pics of myself because people feel compelled to comment and it makes me uncomfortable (good or bad). For some reason I have yet to understand, people don't introduce themselves and make comments on my appearance but on the internet they can discuss it for pages. Rolling Eyes

Worst case scenario, someone steals the image and manipulates it or claims it is a pic of them on another site. How horrible this is depends on your point of view.

Most people post enough information about themselves over time that a dedicated person could find out who they are and where they live without a picture. A picture doesn't tell you much about a person other than their appearance. Mentioning your favorite bar, the store down the street or the church next door is a lot more revealing than a photo.

That's what I've been wondering, too. I don't post pictures of my daughter but if I were to post pictures of myself, would anyone care? I mean, one doesn't need to post pics online to be stalked. Confused

Excellent point, rj. Very true indeed. Most of us regulars have given out at least some information about our locations, where we work, how we spend our free time, etc. If someone really wanted to do so, s/he could track any one of us down pretty easily. The question is: Why would anyone want to go through that kind of trouble just to stalk an ESL teacher? Wink

I could track down shmooj. He works in Seoul and he wears a few leaves of green cabbage on his head. Shouldn't take long.

I could track down Capergirl. She's the prettiest woman in Eastern Canuckistan, plus she speaks the Queen's English. Shouldn't take long.

I could track down Naturegirl. She lives in China and she wants to leave. Shouldn't take long.

I could track down Johnslat. He is travelling in the deserts of western USA, he speaks with a Boston accent. Shouldnt take long.

I could track down SCOT47. It is available on-line from the University of California-Davis Behavioural Education Unit. Shouldnt take long.

I could track down Rhonda Place. She is the famous woman in China who works at the orphanage. "You go Rhonda Place? Miss Rhonda she very great lady!" Shouldnt take long.

I could track down dmb. He is in Istanbul. Shouldnt take long.

I could track down eijse. There cant be many people called eijse in Yemen.
Shouldnt take long.

I could track down lostinparis. There cant be many women with lips like that in Paris. OR COULD THERE? Hmm.

I'm off to Paris. Bye.

I could go to Cambodia and track down khmerhit because he is seriously off-the-wall and with a warped sense of humour.

Ahhhhh, maybe it won't work in Cambodia, or perhaps it _will_ take long.

BTW - can I recommend Three Choirs (Gloucestershire) nv bottle-fermented sparkling wine - it's going down a treat at the mo.

Quote:
Adlestrop

Yes, I remember Adlestrop -
The name, because one afternoon
Of heat the express-train drew up there
Unwontedly. It was late June.

The steam hissed. Someone cleared his throat.
No one left and no one came
On the bare platform. What I saw
Was Adlestrop - only the name

And willows, willow-herb, and grass,
And meadowsweet, and haycocks dry,
No whit less still and lonely fair
Than the high cloudlets in the sky.

And for that minute a blackbird sang
Close by, and round him, mistier,
Farther and farther, all the birds
Of Oxfordshire and Gloucestershire.

You make me feel nostalgic.

That's the same poem that my English teacher quoted at us. We were all Oxfordshire girls, and he lived in Adlestrop. When we said we'd never head of the place, he quoted us that poem.

I've often wondered what happened to him. He really was one of the most inspiring teachers I ever had.
