Does anyone currently live & teach in Cali? Are jobs easy to come by there or pretty few and far between? How safe is it there? I read that kidnappings and homocides have been a big problem in the last few years. I'm a young American female who will be traveling alone. If there are any other young females there I'd love to hear your perspective on how safe you feel there!
Thanks! |

I've only ever visited, but Cali is a nice city. You don't need to be worried about kidnappings or murders...robbery, however, is a major problem in Cali. In the couple days that I spent in Cali this past December I met probably 5 people at the hostel I was staying at that had been robbed, some in broad daylight in decent parts of town. |

If knife point robberies are enough to make you not want to come, then Colombia is not for you. Knife point robberies are a part of life everywhere here. It really isn't a big deal, but some people can't handle I guess. |

I lived in Cali for a bit, CAPITIAL DE SALSA!!!
Great city, not beautiful but a city for rumba and a great atmosphere.
Not many opportunities are obvious from afar but if you go you can try British English for an institute or you can try international schools if thats what you want.
As for danger, its hard to compare, its a big latin american city with lots of poverty but IMVHO alone I think Medellin is slighty more dangerous. Sure its dangerous but San Salvador is worse.
Do you dance salsa??? |

I don't dance salsa.
I eat salsa.
(With tortilla chips, of course.)

Yeah, San Salvador is pretty rough. Interesting place though and very interesting people. |

Sounds like some areas of the Philippines.
Especially, Metro Manila.

Spanglish,
Opportunities exist in the Universities in San Salvador for sure if your interested. Lots of English speaking people throughout El Salvador but the English teaching system in country isn't that great.
For me the machete attacks are a slight put off, but... the predominance of 80's rock is a total no no. |

I was there in January and spoke to someone from the Ministry of Education but I am not at home at the moment so don't have the details. I will be back in a couple of weeks and can get it then.

haha, yes! Definitely like pupusas; they get old if you eat them everyday though. I'm not really looking to go back there, it's such a challenging environment, but who knows. |
