Is a TEFL certificate mandatory to get a legal job and Z visa in China? I keep hearing two sides to this. I have a BA and two years of experience. Thanks. |

The responding member isn't aware of the new policy in China regarding FEC's; in that, a TEFL certificate is officially a new requirement come the fall. This "memo" was distributed to FAO's across China during the past 8 weeks. |

That does not sound right. You are saying every private and public school will require a TESL certification. In my opinion that would put about three quarters of the teachers out of work. |

F A O = Foreign Affairs Office
F E C = ?????
Let's be careful folks with the acronyms. Please state what they mean, and make sure you are typing them correctly.
I know TEFL, but TESL? What is that? Did you mean TESOL?
Also, if you have a memo or something that supports your claims, please share it. Give us a link to the details. |

A TEFL or CELTA certificate is now mandatory to get a foreign expert certificate in Jiangsu province. I'm not sure about other provinces though. |

Thanks.
ooragnakkangaroo: Do you have a link to a Chinese Government site that says this?
I agree with the comment that many of the English teachers would be ineligible to work in China. I don't know about 75%, but a large number certainly.
The Americans are being squeezed out of Korea. The new policy there effective January 2011 that Americans have a national FBI criminal check instead of a state check will discourage many from considering Korea. That document can take 12 weeks to obtain. Now a TEFL/TESOL/CELTA (Does the CHineses Government specify??) will filter out more.
Where will all these teachers go displaced from Korea and China? |

Your FAO could just print out a "TEFL Certificate" and hand it in to the authorities. That is, after all, the method many have used for years to get around the degree and two years experience requirement.
Of course, the Chinese authorities might decide to only recognise certain certificates, but given the absurdity with which other rules and regs continue to be applied, I doubt it.
In reality, any such memo almost certainly just reminded FAOs of existing recommendations. |

MOD TEAM all I do is see you turn up in threads offer no proof of any claims and make wild assertions about members. You must be on a very high horse because you obviously can't see your computer screen properly, there is no recommendation to commit fraud just a (very correct) statement about how some people, including the government, get around the rules of the country.
I personally can't see requiring a TEFL as anymore than a recommendation in job descriptions, it is always worthwhile to invest in a TEFL it is after all another certification that won't do you any harm professionally. |
