According to Vietnamese press, and the observed conditions of half of my city yesterday, the power cut season is already upon us. In addition to this unfortunate part of life, power prices will go up in March by the highest increase in Vietnamese history, a 15% rate increase.

Just an FYI.

^
Thanks for the info.

Why are the rates going up? Are the authorities ending some of a subsidy? Is it a new tax? Or, just a rate hike for the service?

I hope my landlord doesn't want to pass this onto me.

The article I read stated that small rate increases for the service are introduced each March. There was actually a big fight within the Party brass over this big rate hike, as the electricity industry wants to modernize and run at a profit, whereas the people it serves by-and-large can't really handle modern utility pricing, and wouldn't you know it, there are actually members of the Party who care about the little guy. But apparently, they lost out on this one.

If your landlord pays for your electricity as part of your lease agreement, then hopefully it won't matter for you, but along with the devaluation of the dong, I expect landlords will pass this price on to you somehow.

A lot of my adult students are talking about the electricity price hikes and the rising cost of food, and and inflation, etc.

They are pessimistic right now They don't get raises at work because of inflation of these higher costs.

Attitudes are not as rosy as they used to be.

Most of the adult students I had when in Vietnam (recently left for a "real" country) privately questioned the veracity of their government, and its agencies.

Maybe there will be another "revolution" and the wrongdoers will be replaced-That day maybe Ho Chi Minh can stop crying about his dream gone mad, and he will be given the resting place he so much desired instead of being put on display for the glory of a corrupt money grabbing machine.

Vietnam DOES have a rosy future if the views of a lot of the more educated young adults is any indication-they will, as they gain more influence, rid the country of the cancer that lives off it at present.

Cutting electricity so it can be sold to Cambodia who pay $us -very civic minded!

snolly,

Just curious.

Are you still in South East Asia?

Or a new region, all-together?
