What, 8,000rmb for 4-8pm Tuesday through Friday and twelve hours each Saturday and Sunday? It's not the worst gig in the world if:
1. Your particular franchise is run well
2. Your free apartment is decent
3. Any potential roommates aren't bezonkers
4. Recruiting on the street and public demos are kept to a minimum
5. Visa is legit
Unfortunately, these things might not be verifiable. Steven Molteno's much practiced "oh, don't worry, it's a great franchise/apartment/city/roommate!" can be very reassuring, even if they turn out to be false. |

If those hours you mentioned are actually what they expect..it is not far off from the worst gig I could think of.
Their ad mentions an 8-14k range...yeah, expect to be on the low end of that. It does not mention hours per week though and the completion bonus is weak. Plus the ad sounds like you'd be teaching mostly or exclusively children. Definitely not a dream job by my standards and I thought mine were fairly low. I can't say how 8k a month stands with the cost of living in the cities listed either but too good to be true?
Maybe I am missing the boat on this one but I can't see why anyone would think this is some kind of a great deal. |

Yes, it's all children, ages 4-7 or something like that. When I was there in 2008, I remember thinking that if the job paid 10k instead of 8k, it would be a decent gig. Here we are in 2011 and they still pay 8k. I wouldn't bother thinking about the 14k, since that would involve taking up all the free time around the already crummy hours. Not sure how voluntary the extra hours are.
But the materials were pretty good, and if you like teaching kids, it's ok for someone under thirty. I was 35 at the time and felt way too old to be goofing on the street handing out fliers in the boiling rain.
Too good to be true? Yeah, I don't get it either. |

I interviewed for a position with them, its not a bad deal I guess but you will be working 6 days a week. 8 hours Sat & Sun and 2 hours a night from Tuesday-Friday
The apartment is not shared (or wasn't for the position I applied for)
I could be quite happy with those hours & the 8k / month except the fact that your 6 day working week .... is damn near a permanent fixture. There are no holidays at all except for the Chinese National days off.
If there was a couple of week or 2 week breaks between a semester for example, I would accept. As it stands you pretty much cant travel more than a couple of hours from your home because you will be working the next day. |

Careful with that 2 hours a night idea. It might be that way now if only because they haven't found enough students yet. Unless things have changed, I'm pretty sure during the week it's 4-8. I think that's pretty standard for learning centers. And if they are indeed looking to fill four more classes (60 students) that means demos. If the demos are done at the school, it's not a big deal. Done on the street though, no thanks.

True. That's the way it is where I work now, but I'm making decent money, so I'm not too bothered by it. It still amounts to about three weeks of paid vacation time.
But like I said before, the difference between a good experience and being miserable and screwed over all depends on if that particular franchise is run by a decent human being or a screwball. (I guess that goes for all jobs.) |

My first (kinda) job was with these guys. I signed a contract with them 6 weeks before I stepped off the plane in Shanghai only to be told that the teacher I was replacing had changed his mind a few hours before and decided to stay!
I had to hit the internet to find a job and find one quickly. Naturally I always tell people to avoid them but that is just my experience. I'm sure it works out for others. |

I remember reading a VERY bad review about a franchise of this company, that involved managers breaking into teachers apartments physical and verbal assault and other things. I believe the campus was hangzhou, I would make sure you search the web as much as possible for reviews before taking the plunge. |
