Hello All,

I have received a few offers for teaching in the Kingdom. I was wondering how salary negotiation might be viewed to employers/agencies in Saudi. Is it accepted or something that may be considered offensive to employers? Does anyone have any suggestions on how to negotiate salary there?

I want to teach at a university. $36,000 is the minimum that I expected there. I have a Master's degree (in the area of education), a 120-hour TEFL certificate, a year of experience teaching abroad in Korea (elementary level), several years of experience teaching in U.S. public schools (elementary level/all subjects), and a few months experience teaching ESL to a middle-aged student with very limited English ability from another country in the U.S.

I would appreciate any feedback.

If you were a "Master", how would you feel towards a prospective slave proposing negoiations with you?

Well, one was willing to offer a little more, although it is still a little lower than one of my highest offers. I tried to see if they could offer a little more to exceed my highest offer but was told the company they were working with has a set salary guideline for education levels and that the last offer made was what they were offering for a Master's degree. However, this one has been more consistent in communication with me than any of the other places from the first point of contact until now. Though the salary is a little less than what I would like (yet higher than the minimum I expected a teacher could make there), I feel a bit more comfortable with it (especially taking into account the housing situation which is more favorable to me than that of the highest offer, though still not what I would rather have which is a single but at least I only share with 1 other person instead of 2-3 people).

No one with an MA and experience should even consider any job that required one to share housing.

Ridiculous!!

I would prefer not to share but only one place that I got an offer for (univ. position) was offering a single accommodation and even that, I was told in a "secure" hotel. Another place offering single housing was an elementary school, but I didn't pursue that avenue because I wanted to teach at a university to get some experience on that level. However, the other offers for universities said housing was shared, apartment or villa. I was beginning to think this was standard for females.
