I just bought tickets from here: http://reserve.4travel.jp/
Tokyo to Newark for one week round trip. Listed price was 1.1万円, after taxes and stuff it was like 4.7万. Still a really, really good price for a round trip ticket to the east coast of the US. |

| If I'm not mistaken, No. 1 Travel is owned by H.I.S. and they charge the same way. The quotes that they have listed don't include relevant taxes and surcharges. If you want to find the actual price, go through the motions of buying the ticket and eventually you'll see what they want to charge you. |

万 and 万円 - that's pretty cool how you used those chinese symbols, but what about giving it to us so that we understand what they mean? |

That's really good advice, I've done that on several websites. You don't actually purchase the ticket, but you go through the steps and eventually get to the "Check Out" phase of the purchase and then you can finally calculate how much extra is added on to the advertised fare. |

But just in case he really doesn't:

万 (man) is 10,000, so 4.7万円 = 47,000yen... many of your "we" even with awful Japanese can still recognise and understand common kanji such as those used for numbers/common denominations. For those that couldn't, surely it doesn't take too much common sense to copy&paste the character so that they could stick it through an online Japanese-English dictionary or enter "万 translation" into good ol' Google.  They should consider it good practice for dealing with barrage of far more difficult kanji they will likely face. |

That is a very good price, though the only drawback is it's only a 1 week ticket. I would just about be over my jet lag.... |

My two penny's worth:
I was looking for a cheap flight to the UK last October for January this year.
No.1 Travel and Across Travel both quoted me at around 260,000 JPY - via Schipol (KLM) or CDG Paris (AirFrance).
STA offered me a flight on the same dates via Copenhagen (SAS) for 125,000 JPY.
There are a few 'foreigner friendly' agents who market themselves in that manner just to overcharge an unsuspecting market. Foreigners they may peg as being limited in exploring cheaper alternatives due to language barriers.
Or... I could have been unlucky dealing with some unscrupulous agents needing to hit their monthly targets.
Make of it what you will.
PS.Without wanting to flame, using 万 only impresses if you've been in country five minutes and think that Japanese people complementing you is genuine, or don't speak the language. I can write Japanese and don't see the point in posting that way personally, especially if you have to clarify, but to each his own etc... |

STA is aimed mostly at young people on tight budgets (aka students). They even have some tickets only on sale to young people under 26.
I flew out here direct with Virgin on one of these tickets which cost me half the price of buying the ticket for the exact same flight directly from the Virgin site.
The Japan STA site isn't as good as the UK one though so you have to contact them for actual prices, but they are very easy to deal with. Good ol' Noriyuki has never done wrong by me.
I haven't always bought from them since their deals are normally for ecomony fares and sometimes it works out cheaper to pay a little extra to fly back business class (which my baby brother gets me some nice discounts on) because I'm planning to bring back a lot and excess luggage prices are extortionate. But I always run prices via STa first just to work out if I'm getting value for money. |

HIS is well known for scamming foreigners. Avoid them and their equally scummy offshoots at all costs.
For the best prices and zero hassles go direct to the airline web-sites. |

I am not sure about going directly to the airline. I must say that I do not live in Japan yet, therefore I really have no idea.
I plan on taking a trip to Koh Phangan, Thailand as soon as possible after I move there. Of Course, you can only fly to Koh Samui and then ferry to Koh Phangan.
Across 1 Travel fare to Koh Sumui = 55,000 yen
JAL fare = 127,000 yen
I realize that H.I.S. really adds on a lot of extra charges. Do they really add on 72,000+ yen charges?
I looked at five different travel dates that were all two months out and came back with the same numbers.
Am I missing something? |

No.1 and H.I.S are equally crap. Even Japanese people seek alternatives.

Completely agree on the price difference. But, charges do add up. Some people prefer the hassle free way of buying a ticket. I personally go for the cheapest ticket I can find with a maximum 6 hr transfer wait between connections. If I had the money and was going direct, I might consider buying from an airline for the convenience and points. |
