How much do I need to live reasonably well in Guatemala City?
Edited to add: My question was rather poor, so let me rephrase, how much do I need to make per month to live reasonably well in Guatemala City? |

Define "reasonably well"
If you want to live like an an expat, maybe $5000. A local, probably a couple hundred dollars. Somewhere in between would be good though. |

Then if you make between $500 and $5000 and budget wisely I'm sure you'll be ok. Just try not to get a flat on the first two floors. |

I am not too worried about when I am home. I am a pretty frightening guy actually (300 pounds and can bench my bodyweight). But I am concerned about when I am not there... |

1. You can't be there all the time
2. The person may have a weapon
3. There might be two or more huge guys just like you
All I can say is that in Lima, embassy workers are FORBIDDEN to live on the first couple of floors. |

Ok I'll try to get floor 5 or higher. And I won't get a place that does not have an armed guard. I was thinking about buying a gun too, but I know that is controversial to some people. I always have one in my house in Florida and read that Americans can buy them in Guatemala after completing some paperwork. At a minimum I'll buy a baseball bat.
Anyway I did not mean to hijack my own thread with a discussion on guns. I am sure some people are against them. I grew up with them, but whatever. I will just stay someplace with guards and on the 5th floor or higher and get a baseball bat and a big knife and a dog. |

I have lived in Guatemala, and I would like to go back, but anywhere but Guatemala City. It is pretty lawless, the police are useless, its really each man for himself for the most part. As far as what you need to live, I would say probably 5000 quetzales if you are frugal. Not that its any of my business but why Guatemala City? |

Its where I got a job. I suppose I could have kept looking, but it is what it is. I liked the people I talked to on the phone. They seemed like a neat professional group. At this point I have decided to do it, and will give it a try. As Genghis Khan once said, "what will be, will be." |

There is that! Like I said, I loved living in Guatemala, my work environment was great, the people I met in my everyday life were great, the country is out of this world beautiful, outside of Guatemala City. The good news is the country is small, and you can travel a lot on weekends, if you want. And it is a very cheap place to live. |

I always thought Doris Day said that. |
