Hello,
I am trying to figure out what kind of pay i should be aiming to get from my situation. I am most probably heading for Shanghai in June with my girlfriend. I am a 27 year old Irish male. I will have a Bachalors degree in Behhavioural Studies at theat point from University of Aberdeen in the UK and i also have a weekend TEFL certificate. On top of that i have 2 months of primary school english teaching in Thailand. Although it has been a while since i was in the classroom situation, I am not daunted by the prsopect of ESL teaching and would be confident that i could settle in most english teaching situations quickly.
So what should i expect job wise and pay wise? Should i expect anything over 10000rmb for an intitial contract? Should i expect accomodation included? What is the norm here for somebody pretty much starting out with ESL teaching? Any information is greatly appreciated.
Cheers
Joe

The 2 years experience isn't an option, its is a requirement for a teaching permit (foreign expert's permit). It is not a schools request, its the Governments demand.

That being said, they never check overseas experience, so 2 months could be two years. Granted if you get caught, your done with that school... or more likely they will hang it over your head.

The reason there is some "iffyness" to the whole 2 year thing is that it is a new national requirement ( came into effect some time in the last 3 years ), but the paperwork is often done on a provincial, Or in Shanghai's case municipal level.

To get a working visa as a teacher, you need the experts permit ( certificate in some provinces ). That requires the 2 years experience.

Two years' experience: compulsory
Apostrophes: optional

My opinion is this:
10k is a bit optimistic with your stats.

You'll be looking at bottom rung jobs - 5000 at a university or 7000 at a language school.

I'm on my second year teaching in China and I had 0 experience before coming over here. I've had Z-visas, residence permits, and the little expert book for both jobs I've had

I don't think 10K is unreasonable if you are selective with your employer. Look around a bit, there are lots of jobs.

Are these 10k jobs advertised? If they are, I must be looking in the wrong places.
