my cv is 2 pages. i have 2 glowing letters of recommendation; should i add them to my resume when looking for work? i know that it is said 2pages is the max length for a cv but would this count? my instinct is to add them as they praise me quite a bit and are very relevant to esl work?

Hi tomaschonnie,
I guess there is no right or wrong answer, but when applying for jobs I personally just stick to sending whatever they have requested. If they have just asked for a covering letter and CV, that's all I would give them. You can certainly mention in your CV (I would) that you can supply excellent references. Some employers don't put much store in written references anyway, because no one ever shows them a bad one. Also if they are getting a stack of applications to look through, some interviewers would probably prefer applicants just to follow the instructions so they can get through the first screening as quickly as possible. Obviously it's up to you and I don't think it would be deal breaker either way. Good luck with the job hunt! |

No, this should be part of your interview package along with copies of your passport, degree, ESL certification, criminal background check, etc...

so im guessing most of you will say typed.. but if im sending out 50 cvs then its quite a chore. i know that sound lazy but i have no access to a printer and i think it might be better to personalize each one with good handwriting rather than go through all the hassle with printing each time. |
First, get a cellphone - this is a necessity for response.
Second, get a professional photo done and make enough 3 x 5cm copies to exceed all the CV's you plan to give out.
Third, using Microsoft Word type out your CV designing it so that you'll have room to glue a photo to a top corner. You can go to most of the Internet Cafes and gain access to a printer and even MW, the price is usually very cheap.
Next, go to one of the many places that print copies but be careful to pick some good quality paper for a least the CV and have them print your CV on the front and back of the same paper, effectually reducing a 2 page CV to one. The quality of paper isn't nearly as important for the interview package that you'll probably want to print up at the same time.
After that, take it all home and organize it. Use a glue stick to thoroughly attach the photos to each CV but be careful not to be excessive with the glue as it can cause some buckling of the paper, which takes away from that professional look. Let the glue dry about 24 hours before handing them out.
Lastly, cold calling is very much the normal for the Saigon area. Even if you don't get an immediate reponse, they'll keep it on file. I've had some schools call me up 2 - 3 years later and many within a much shorter interval. Dress in the kind of clothes that you'd probably teach a class wearing, you only get one chance for a good first impression. When you walk in the front door, only expect them to accept your CV but make certain it gets to the HR officer - if you get an immediate interview, so much the better! So go prepared for this BUT don't expect it!
Then, go back home and relax. It'll only be a matter of time before you'll find employment. In this economy, the responses might be a little slow in coming in but you should be able to find something.
Last word of advice, in VN the contracts are hardly even worth the paper that they're written on - so, if you later get a better offer - it's completely normal for teachers to quit a contract before the completion. Don't fret about this, you're just doing to them what they would do to you if they get a better offer from another teacher.
Good Luck and happy hunting! |

fantastic response thanks so much, its actually quite daunting here in HCMC; a real culture shock coming from Ireland!
got a sim card at the airport last week, and ive created a specific formal email address for just this purpose.
luckily, I have my cv already made up and printed and it conforms to what you recommended so im delighted. differs slightly in that i put a photo in the word document to be printed. looks good though and in colour too.
Im ready to go! |
