"Saudi Official: Gulf military force enters Bahrain

A security official in Saudi Arabia says a military force from Gulf states has entered Bahrain to help deal with a month of political unrest in the island kingdom.
The Saudi official says the units come from a special force within the six-nation Gulf Cooperation Council. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not allowed to brief media. He did not have information on the size of the force, but says they were deployed by air and road and will help protect key buildings.
The intervention sharply boosts the regional stakes on behalf of Bahrain's embattled Sunni rulers, who have faced growing pressures from the country's majority Shiites for sweeping political reforms.
The GCC members are Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Qatar, Oman and the United Arab Emirates.
THIS IS A BREAKING NEWS UPDATE. Check back soon for further information. AP's earlier story is below.
MANAMA, Bahrain (AP) A security official in Saudi Arabia says a military force from Gulf states has been mobilized for Bahrain after a month of political unrest in the island kingdom.
The Saudi official says the units come from a special force within the six-nation Gulf Cooperation Council. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not allowed to brief media.
The intervention sharply boosts the regional stakes on behalf of Bahrain's embattled Sunni rulers, who have faced growing pressures from the country's majority Shiites for sweeping political reforms. Earlier Monday, a parliament bloc appealed for Bahrain's king to impose martial law.
The GCC includes Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Qatar, Oman and the United Arab Emirates."

The King of Bahrain has just declared a "State of Emergency" with a duration of 3 months.

The BBCs Caroline Hawley is reporting from Manama currently. The video in her reports webpage shows troops crossing the causeway...

The presence of Saudi troops will not go down well with the majority of the Bahrainis! This is a high risk strategy.

But there's plenty in the Saudi press about their 'brave soldiers' saving the world.
