Howdy, Taiwan experts!
After this winter in Russia (my 5th), I have decided to at least poke around the various (warmer) countries to see what kinds of jobs might be out there for someone like me.
In short, could a guy with the following credentials/experience make enough in Taiwan to support a family of three (myself, my wife and son)?:
* BA in English;
* Eight years ELT-ing;
* Two years as academic director (my current position);
* CELTA (2003);
* IELTS examiner (past 3 years);
* Will finish an M. Ed. in Curriculum and Instruction - ESL in 2012; and
* Really nice guy Smile
What kind of job in Taiwan could I find now? How about after I (hopefully) finish my M. Ed. (if there's a difference)?
What could I expect in terms of pay? Would that amount be enough to support my family?
I might add here that I am mixed-race (1/2 white, 1/2 black); most people think I look Pacific-Islander-ish.
Be brutally honest, I can hack it! Cool

You might look into becoming an IELTS examiner in southern China.

You might find a job as a manager in Taiwan but it seems that most schools are run by Taiwanese management in my experience. You can read the other thread about university jobs that has been going on recently.

JZer,

Thank you for the input.
Are there other positions that might be possibly had in Taiwan, for example senior teacher, ADOS, or the like?
If not, what could one with my "mini" resume (above) make teaching somewhere (private language school, or Uni?).

I will look into the IELTS examining on the mainland. Thank you for the idea!

This thread will give you an idea of what you can make teaching at a university in Taiwan.

You will probably get paid 50,000 to 60,000NT.

jpvanderwerf2001, please be aware that the birth rate in Taiwan has fallen below replacement levels and it has been predicted that some Taiwanese universities will have to close in the next ten years.

I think IELTS positions are advertised on Dave's ESL cafe.

You'd most likely have to take an entry-level position and work your way up, as in-country experience is valued here more than anything else. After a couple of years, once you have shown your value, then you could possibly find some management or curriculum design possibilities. The only problem is that good entry-level jobs are getting harder to find.

From one family man to another, be cautious about moving your family here. It is possible to earn a good living here, but people are having to work harder and harder to get it. There is nothing more important than your family, so if you've got a good thing going where you are, I say keep at it and save your rubles.

Thank you for the heads up, apple. I'm just shopping around.
You are indeed right that nothing is more important than family, which is precisely why I'm looking to leave Russia! However, gotta make ends meet, so Taiwan doesn't look like a great prospect.
I appreciate everyone's frank input! Smile

Take a look at Vietnam - I think your qualifications would bring in better pay there than in Taiwan. Job opportunities there are plenty.
