|
|
I have been looking since October, but haven't found any fitness clubs which allow people with tattoos in my area other then the city gym. I live in Kanagawa, Yamato-shi.
I am currently working out at the Yamato City gym which allowed tattoos, yet, unfortunately, they will be removing their weights section in a few weeks.
I know Golds allows tattoos, yet, I'm looking for a place where I can use the sauna as well. At Golds you have to cover them at all times.
Any information would be greatly appreciated. |

How large are your tattoos? How far are you willing to commute? What hours/days do you typically go to the gym?
I'm heavily tattooed and have given up on the idea of finding private gyms in the greater Tokyo area that are tattoo friendly. Public (ward, city, etc) gyms won't/can't discriminate, but the facilities aren't always the best and the operating hours are god awful.
You mentioned Golds, but depending on the size(s) of your tattoo(s), they won't let you join. I'm working out at their Harajuku branch, and they've gotten nasty over the last 2 years or so. I remember when guys with full body suits would hit up the sauna, no questions asked. Those were the days.
Seriously though, good luck

I only have 2 tattoos, the one on my arm is 9cm long, and on my leg 14cm.
I was going to the local city gym, yet, they are removing their weights next month! They were far grom great, but at least it was someplace to go.
I'm willing to travel about 30 minutes by train for a gym. I usually go 3 times a week in the mornings. I live near Machida on the Odakyu line.
I called Golds Express in Machida, and the Golds in Hon Atsugi and they said I would have to cover up even in the sauna. ??
Thanks for the information and the link!
Keep training hard! |

Gold's Gym South Tokyo Annex (Omori - between Shinagawa and Kawasaki) seems to be really relaxed about it. I don't think it would be an exaggeration to say that about 50% of men in the gym of an evening are tattooed and they make no effort to cover them. It may have something to do with the South Annex being a K2 centre. |

It probably has something to do with that. According to their tattoo policy, if you participate in certain clubs or events that are (in)directly affiliated with Golds but are not an actual member of Golds, then they'll waive the restrictions.
The guys that are all tattooed up, are they actual members? What type of tattoos do they have? How large? Sleeves, back-pieces, etc? If the rules are that loose, I might switch locations |

I don't know about that. I just checked out half of my body in the mirror, and they seem so right now. |

I guess so, they are regulars anyway.

Dragons, writing (Thai, Japanese, English), Jesus, Buddha etc...
From small ones on the biceps to total coverage on the back.

Yep.
There are signs up saying that tattoos should be covered but they seem to be ignored (in the locker room at least). Of course in the gym itself people wear clothes that mostly cover the offending images. The most flagrant violations are committed in the evening. |

Regrettably, very Yakuza in its implication, even today. I understand there are gyms that may not have a problem, but you may be severely restricted going into many bath houses, unless of course they admit gangsters. (Aside from the violent movie depictions, they can be challenging but not all that unpleasant.) |
