I live about 100km CLOSER to the quake than BKK and we certainly didn't feel it.

As far as being a trend, USGS reports, on average, about 30 quakes per month of magnitude 5.5 or greater around the globe. I don't see it as being a trend for quakes; just a trend in reporting because the places tend to be better known than places like New Caledonia that regularly see quakes.

We've got an ap for that Embarassed
Seriously, there are 6 or more earthquakes daily somewhere in the world Quite a few in Arkansas over the past few months, for example...

It's an active planet - and I think always has been - nothing new (hopefully).

Have you heard of the US religious group who say the world will end on 21 May 2011 - from earthquakes??
Presumably they're pretty pleased with recent catastrophic quake patterns...

I meant big scary earthquakes that result in other bad things.. like the rock monster escaping from the depths of hell :: shifty eyes ::.

@tttompatz - I figured it was the news being, well, the news. Good to know it wasn't as serious as all that.

Well, I don't think we need to be holding our collective breath on 21 May, but...I guess some few people will!

Some people need to believe in something concrete even if it involves the the end of the world as we know it Wink !

I think people have been predicting the End of Times since ..well, the beginning of time. It might be good to have a concrete date but would chaos ensue? Probably.

It'd be handy, though, especially with all those recent dire predictions regarding the miserable fate of TEFL teachers in retirement and just generally. What was it all now? Poor, destitute, desperate, unfulfilled, rejected by a winning society and useless to boot. Be good to know in advance we didn't have to worry at all about this fate befalling us!

I don't want to hijack the thread because it might come across as disrespectful of the people of Myanmar.

But - if you were convinced the world will end on 21 May, where'd you want to be?

Dear John:

I'm in general agreement...I'd just want to be in one of my favourite places on this earth with my nuclear family.

Best,
spiral & Co.

Sounds like the Y2K hysteria from a decade ago.

Dear chaiplz,

Where you would outlast those on Earth for a short time and then die an agonizing, lonely death.

Regards,
John

Depends on whether we're talking about the end of humans or the end of the earth itself. If it's the former, Chaiplz could always come back after whatever event had taken place. Being alone wouldn't be much fun though.

I'd like to think of some nice romantic dream like walking peacefully in a garden at night (assuming we had til midnight) and viewing the Milky Way one last time. Probably I'd be reaching for the wine bottle and employing the Duvet Technique (diving under).
