Hello everyone,
I have a BA from the States and just got my CELTA (pass B) in Vietnam this month. I'm now on the job hunt and have heard great things about Taiwan. Here are my questions:
What cities or towns would you suggest for easy access to outdoorsy stuff? I would like to live somewhere where I could hop on my motorbike and zip into the countryside, maybe do some hiking, go for a run in the open air and stuff like that. I love beaches, water sports, and warm weather too! At the same time, I'd rather not be too isolated from other teachers (I don't know a word of Mandarin), so some kind of balance would be nice.
Also, has anyone had experience getting placed with Tefl One? They claim about $1500/month (USD) and help with work permits, apt hunting, placement teaching small classes, etc. Too good to be true?
Thanks so much for your ideas and help!! |

Ultimately, the advice I am going to give you is the same I have been giving for years here: If you can at all, come here and look around before committing to working for any particular school/company in any particular place. "Countryside" has a different meaning here than it does in our home countries. Often it means polluted, under developed and isolated. Major cities like Taipei and Kaohsiung offer relatively easy access to mountains and outdoor pursuits, while simultaneously possessing better infrastructure and amenities. Some of the east coast towns are pretty nice, but small and possibly a bit isolated for a newly arrived foreigner. In any event, you are doing yourself a favour if you can have a look around and see what this place is about before signing on the bottom line. Recruiters and agents are also best avoided if at all possible. |
