Most people I know who work abroad long term - even those who claim they aint never coming back - still maintain a bank account in the home country, usually at mother's address.
Has anyone cut the umbillical completely and just used local banks in whichever countries they were working at the time?
Which countries have the best or worst banking systems in the world? |

Wow! I have to know what you do with your money! Do you hide it under your pillow or something?
I imagine I will always have a bank account in the United States, but I don't need to use my mother's address, because I do all my banking online! Welcome to the 21st Century and all that jazz, right? Anyone else totally online now? |

I have online banking, but I still need a physical address to open a bank account in Canada. That said, there are completely on-line banks (such as President's Choice) that don't need a land address to open up.

I have an account with my dad as a secondary signer so that if there are problems, he can go to the bank and straighten it out for me. Now that all the loans are all paid off and no one wants any more cash from me in Canada, I am considering closing it and going all online.
Is PChoice Bank a good idea for all online banking? |

I've always had a bank account in my country of residence. I recently set up an off-shore account(which is online) |

I have bank accounts in hong Kong, Thailand and Indonesia, but all my credit cards are still based in the UK.
From my experience Thailand was the worst place to bank, especially the Bangkok Bank - they didn't have a clue! |

I do my banking online, but I still get paper statements mailed to my parents' address. (Why?!?!? I certainly don't need them!) I also send money back to my mom for her to deposit into my account. Maybe I should have added her name to the account, but so far there haven't been any problems.

After my experience in Iran in 1979, I always had an account in the States when I was overseas. I knew colleagues who lost their life savings when the revolution happened there. I was lucky; I only lost a couple of thousand dollars. But it taught me a lesson - send the money home ASAP.
I also gave my Significant Other Power of Attorney, which came in very handy on many occasions. However, to do that, you'd better have someone you trust completely.
Regards,
John |

I've kept a bank account at 'mum's' address in the UK. So no cord broken there. I've also kept a Spanish one open; great interest rates... And of course, four chinese ones..... good and bad points of each... |

I still have my account in the States, and I have my mom's name on it. I also have two Turkish bank accounts, one in local currency, one in dollars. After the crash several years ago (which I thankfully wasn't here for), I think it's best to put everything in dollars a.s.a.p! My mom has an ATM card for my accounts in the States and Turkey, so she can easily transfer money for me. I do most things on line, though. Isn't the Internet great? |

Lucy you should have put it in pounds sterling not dollars. 2 years ago you got 1.40 dollars to the pound these days its nearer 2! make it very easy for us brits to take foreign holidays but dead expensive to work abroad and try and save with such a strong currency. |
