My preference is for teaching adults, and I will have an M.A. in TESOL and French. I have teaching experience, but may have to teach K-12. I am not sure.
How does one go about landing a job? Does anyone know the agency Teach Away? I saw them on-line, and I know nothing about them.
Thanks... |

Do you have a teaching certificate/license from your home country? That is required for Teachaway.
They are hiring for the Ministry as part of a major re-vamping of the K-12 system in the UAE. You have to go through a recruiter for these jobs and their reputation is decent thus far. They have a Facebook page for your reading pleasure.

Yes, I have a teaching certificate from the U.S. I have, however, been teaching college students for the past two years. I have taught in Korean language academies before that. I did teach in an inner city high school, but I am not sure how to compare that to what people would experience in the UAE. How is the student population in the UAE? |

Answered on the other thread.
But, do you have an MA or not? On the other thread I interpreted it as you do, but this one says "will." Most of the universities prefer to see experience after the MA, so it could be a bit of a snag.
What you need is that first position after the MA. The easiest might be to look at the smaller government colleges in Oman spread around the country. They use various local recruiters to place the teachers and there are issues with managements and such that can be read about on the Oman threads. Not great jobs, but get your foot in the door of the ME and give you some experience to put on the CV post MA if you need it.

I will technically have my M.A. on May 15th. That's my ceremony day. I have applied to the Oman jobs yesterday. I also applied to three university jobs in Korea yesterday. I am familiar with Korea, but I can also speak Arabic with no problem. I just don't know the job terrain in the Gulf, but I am looking on Dave's and applying. |

The first job in the Gulf AND with a newly minted MA is always difficult. I'd suggest that you latch onto a Korean job if you get an offer for something at university level. Once you have 2-3 years on your CV post MA, it will be easier to get the Gulf jobs. Unfortunately the ability to speak Arabic doesn't factor into employer requirements.

A friend of mine who is not even a native speaker landed a job with his M.A. He has an M.A. in linguistics. He is a Jordanian citizen, but you're telling me an American like myself with an M.A. who can speak Arabic fluently and is a native speaker of English can't do the same? I hope I will land a job. I am just not sure where to search. |

It very much depends on the job. There are some truly terrible jobs in the UAE/Gulf (like the rest of the world). The good jobs are VERY competitive right now and the best employers are getting pickier. I have heard of Americans with new MAs who couldn't even get an interview with the employers that they were interested in...
As I said above... a knowledge of Arabic doesn't factor in at all...
