RETRO MAN: Kiwi crikcet star Chris Cairns - more retro than metro.
PHIL DOYLE/Sunday Star-Times
Welcome back to the Kiwi bloke
21 March 2004

It's goodbye to the smooth-skinned, eyebrow-plucking metrosexual man and hello, again, to the Kiwi bloke.

The "metrosexual" - a name coined by British writer Mark Simpson in the mid-'90s referring to the straight man willing to embrace his feminine side - is on the way out and "retrosexual" (also coined by Simpson) pin-ups such as manlier-than-man Chris Cairns, unshaven Viggo Mortensen or roguish Marc Ellis are in.

According to TNS research managing director Murray Campbell, the Kiwi bloke is back. "With the rise of females succeeding in the education system and being out of the home more, there seems to be a counter-action among males to reclaim who they are and what they do," Campbell said.

Kiwi cricketer Chris Cairns reckons he's probably a retrosexual. "I guess so, being a son of Lance Cairns. He was a bloke's bloke.

"I do enjoy the finer things, like a nice cafe and nice wine, but I also don't mind a bit of a shindig at a farm shed with a few blokes and a keg. I like to mix it up."

Cairns' long, curly hair fitted right in when he played for English county side Nottingham last year. "A few of the guys in the team have a lot of hair. Big hair is definitely back."

But he says his stubble is a sign of laziness. Now the Kiwi team's shaving rules have been relaxed he can sport facial hair on match day. "We used to have to be clean shaven. Now that's optional, which is good because it's important to make an individual statement."

Of his team mates, Cairns believed his well-groomed, clean-shaven captain "Flem" (Stephen Fleming) was more a metrosexual.

They're really hard to find though

1. Employed
2. Not married
3. Not addicted to illegal substances

Why can't I seem to find one who meets these three basic criteria? Rolling Eyes

C'mon Capergirl, if you are going to be that picky, you are never going to find anybody! There are plenty of unemployed married crack addicts that would make great soul mates out there Wink.

Do you mean my dream man? I don't think he exists, but here are the qualities that he would have to have, in no particular order:
* is vegan or at least vegetarian
* is non-smoking (things other than tobacco are OK, though)
* has a job that truly interests him (whatever that may be) and that doesn't just pay the bills
* is somewhere between ultra and radically left-wing, but not a kook or conspiracy theorist, and not always inclined to discuss politics and "issues" 100% of the time (but MUST be aware of international issues!)
* is healthy and in decent shape--not necessarily a fitness buff, but must respect himself enough to take care of himself
* is NEVER deliberately hurtful--sure, arguments happen, but those are heat-of-the-moment-type things, usually lacking in deliberation
* would NEVER deliberately harm an animal
*either not religious or willing to accept that I'm not and never will be
*has travelled and seen a bit of the world
* can be both kind & loving and dark & sarcastic--at appropriate times
*appreciates me
* is cute, intelligent, kind, witty, sexy, yada yada yada

Am I destined for a lifetime of solitude?!?!? Hey, that reminds me... on that "which book are you?" thread, I was "One hundred years of solitude." Fitting?

Crying or Very sad

Denise, apart from the veggie thing, and, as a natural consequence, the hurting animals bit, I'm your man!

Sorry, but rabbit tastes far too good to give up. Razz

Denise!

Absolutely amazing how you did that without meeting me. Other than "vegan," you've described me! Shall we meet in Shizuoka this summer? After all, we're both Tweety.
