I'm currently planning on taking a position in Korea next year. I've recently been doing a bit of research on Taiwan and its sparked my interest. I know all the perks for Korea and I have seen jobs in Taiwan w/ similar benefits. From what I can tell most jobs don't offer housing but I've seen a fair few w/ air packages. What are some of the thing's you love about Taiwan?...Things you hate? Anyone who's worked in both places I'd particularly like to hear your thoughts.
Why should I choose Taiwan over Korea? |

| Not sure what type of jobs you are looking at in Taiwan that offer an airfare, but a quick look at the jobs in other countries shows that they are usually better paid to say the least. Why would you want to come to Taiwan? If there is nothing special about Taiwan that draws you here, then I'd say head on over to another country. I'm sure many other people will chime in after me, but Taiwan is pretty much in a slump and heading downhill at the moment. I really don't see the point of coming here unless it's for some specific reason besides teaching. |

Do a search. There are recent threads on this topic with about 6 pages of information, opinions and comments on them. They will help you figure out what you can expect living in Taiwan.
Look for:
1. 10 things you hate about Taiwan
2. Ten things you like about Taiwan. |

Either you want to come here or you don't. Why should we 'sell you' on the idea? Frankly - and bluntly - I don't really care. One less teacher here is one less teacher I have to compete with for work.
Read the threads, get some information, and if you're still not sure come back and ask a specific question or two. |

Now you can see what happens to foreigners in Taiwan after a few years. So, you can make your own decision on whether to come to Taiwan or not! |

Guess that's why you're leaving eh JZ'er?
Before you become cynical, jaded and begin to make sense?
I suppose I could explain why I posted what I did, try and convince all and sundry that there was a hidden meaning, an uncharted depth of reason (that nobody noticed the first time) - you know - as you would do.
But for anyone with a modicum of sense it's a pretty fair reply.
If you're not sure about coming here then go somewhere else. The world's a big place. Do some research, ask some questions, make your mind up and go for it.
Or don't.
Is that an example of 'what happens to foreigners', is it just a realistic perspective, or are you just spoiling for another attempt to (try and) prove your knowledge of all things Taiwanese is superior to everyone else's?
If I was a betting man I know which one I'd pick...

Shimokitazawa is spot on.
OP, it's up to you to motivate yourself to come to Taiwan, and the only way to make that decision is to research, research, and research. Then you know whether you are making the right decision, any doubts dont come! |

Maybe some of us actually have skills and don't spend our time worrying about newbies taking our jobs. |

Ok, I'll bite. The advantages to Taiwan are the people and a more normal life. In Korea, you have to deal with hypernationalism and xenophobia on a scale you just won't see in Taiwan. I'd venture to say that Taiwan is one of the easiest places for a non-Asian to live in Asia. The people are, for the most part, friendly and quite tolerant. The work is also easier and more laid-back. Furthermore, you tend to get screwed over far less often by employers in Taiwan. If I had to sum up in a broad sweeping generalization, it would be: Korea for money; Taiwan for lifestyle. YMMV. |
