Hi,

I am considering TEFL in China and would appreciate some advice.

My situation is: native English speaker with a BA, I do not have TEFL or teaching experience.

I would like teach in a city rather than an rural environment to begin with at least I think.

Can anyone here give any advice on employers, locations, agencies, best times to apply etc.

Sorry if my post seems somewhat open ended but I am really new to this.

Thanks

Your posts 'open-endedness' may be why you havent had any replies. Have you considered the detailed comments I gave you in another thread? By considering my replies in that thread, you may be able to narrow down your field of questions which may attract more replies/responses.

China is a big place. Wildly different climate and cultures exist. Teaching is a broad field, and experience and education may be key requirements. Narrowing down the questions posed is going to help quite a lot. Very Happy

I apologize for nickpellat's unhelpful reply. Let me see if I can offer up something a little more in line with what you're asking for.

My advice is to head for a decent area, and seek out a good job, not necessarily in that order. And then you should always try to grow and develop. Try hard, and do not give up.

Good luck!

Not sure if that is sarcasm or not Zero Smile

I did reply in more detail in an identical post in the newbie forum to the same poster. This included some rather pertinent information about teaching in China, and it was suggested the OP head to this forum for more detailed information. It would have made sense to take that information and ask more detailed questions and give more information, not less. Kinda helps. Smile

crestofawave - You might want to ask for some clarification on the info I already gave you regarding visa and qualifications. Having already advised you on the flexibility of 'law' in China, further opinions are a good idea. I had already mentioned some people may have different views on the value of EFL related qualifications, again, would you be interested in asking other China FTs about this? My advice is only based on my experience, so its worth asking.

I also mentioned the type of teaching, have you considered this any further? And also things like climate are important as I previously mentioned, have you thought more about this? The more information you give the more people can (and will) offer help and advice.

Its quite frustrating to write a heap of info and give someone a heads up on a Uni gig in Harbin, starting next month to then discover the person you are helping failed to mention they want to teach kindergarten and cant start until October.

Don't want to inflame the issue but I have noticed an increasing number of OPs by would be teachers who clearly haven't done even the most basic of Dave's ESL searches on the topics they ask about.
