|

Has anyone checked out or bought an English OS PDA in Japan (or more specifically in Akihabara). I want to buy one and I can't decide whether to get it here or order it from Australia. I'm heading up to Tokyo in April to meet a friend at the airport and I was planning on checking the options and prices at Akihabara to see what prices and models are like.
Anyone have any info on this?? |

You can buy Japanese OS PDA and download the English OS off the net as longas it isn't a brand new model. |

Ah, I have a Japanese OS PDA - an IPAQ Pocket PC to be exact - I'd be interested in knowing where I can get the English OS from online Guest... |

Shmooj - did you but it in Japan? I'm really trying to decide whether it cheaper to get one here or just order one from home in Oz (or have my friend bring one from the US). |

easy... I did buy it in Japan in Osu, Nagoya actually. But an Oz friend of mine bought his in his homeland despite living here. he did want a top of the range model and he couldn't read Japanese either. I didn't have the option as it was buy one there or buy one here in Seoul where, currently at least, they are more expensive than in Japan.
I truly cannot remember how much I paid for it I'm afraid. |

Shmooj, try CNet.com.
If that doesn't work just type PDA shareware into google and see what comes.
There are a lot of over educated, but underemployed Asians who love to spend there free time filling the net with such goodies.
I bought my PDA in Japan for about 30,000 yen. It was almost the same as the US price, although maybe a slight bit cheaper. My PDA at the time was too modern. My computer guru friend found me the driver on the net. I was able to download it to my computer and make my computer and PDA compatable, but my PDA itself only uses Japanese. It hasn't presented that big a problem. |

Thanks for the info. I t looks like they might be a bit cheaper here for me compared to Oz then because the prices in Australia are generally higher than the US. Probably get a cooler model here too and I think I'll be able to get an English OS one in Akihabara. What kind did you get? |

sorry... I may have misunderstood... you are talking a whole OS in English here. My computer is Japanese OS and my PDA is too. If I convert my PDA to English OS (is that really what you are saying I can do), will they still be able to communicate to each other? |

Sorry Shmooj, I think coverting your PDA to an English OS would be a nightmare as your computer uses a Japanese OS.
I am saying that you can download a an English OS ro your PDA in most cases. At the very least you can download an English driver to make a Japanese OS PDA work with an English OS computer.
I don't have any experience with your particular situation, but I'd imagine it to be a headache at the very least. And actually since your Japanese ability is good enough to use a Japanese OS computer, I don't see any reason to make the PDA use an English OS. I can say this. Usually a Japanes OS will recognize things in English, but the opposite is not true.
Easyasabc, I have a Sony Clie. I've forgotten the model number. It might be SJ33. My Japanese OS PDA has no problem using English programs. |
