Hi fellow ELS teachers,

I have a questions about a recruiter that has posted on jobsites here in South Africa. For a very valid reason a feel a deep weariness over the job offers, as this person wants applicants to send him theri resumes, a photo, degree, TEFL certificate and passport. I am attaching the last part of his ad for you guys to read. Am I right to be very weary? I am thinking of coming to China for a year, but just don't feel comfortable with this recuiter's ad. Maybe some of you have had experience with this person or can confirm my suspicions. Your replies are welcomed Smile

This is the last part of his ad:

Email me the resume, photo, degree, passport so I can do my best to line up an ESL job for you before arriving

I think what they are after is proof as to where you are from and what you look like.

If you blot out your passport number and personal information and they still ask for it, then they are the ones 'asking' for it.

Personally however, I pass on such ads but that is just me. You do not need to prove to them anything; if they have job offers, they will offer you jobs. They do not need to know your shoe size before they give you a list of jobs to choose from.

Resume and photo should be more than plenty, and I would tell them that straight up.

Good luck.

Were you weary when you were posting about being wary of recruiters?

To the first poster - thanx for the good reply. I decided to not reply to this advertisement. If I feel uneasy about something, I'm usually right.

To the second poster - so I made a silly spelling mistake. Big deal. Nobody is perfect amd we all make mistakes. I've read posts that had grammar mistakes, punctuation and even spelling mistakes. I do not however attack those people or show them out or make them feel bad to make me feel better. Forums are there to provide help. Your post really wasn't helpful at all.

The thing that would make me wary is the lack of the name of the organization this person works for. That and the fact the person isn't giving you their name. I would request this information before forwarding any personal information.

One theme that is constantly being repeated on this forum is important: you don't need a recruiter to get a job in China, and often the introduction of a third party complicates and degrades the whole situation.

Respond to schools that advertise positions directly so you know who you're dealing with. As suggested, black out your passport number and watermark your diploma. If you do choose to use a recruiter, make sure you know exactly who they are and which organization the represent. Here, the person is pitching like a recruiter, but the contact info would lead one to believe that they are the "Foreign Affairs Manager" in the "International Department" of... what?
