Hi Everyone,
I was wondering if I could have your advice on my current teaching situation.
My fianc and I really want to teach in some kind of international/bilingual school in Bangkok.
We both taught in Korea for 2 years and now we are back in the USA obtaining our teaching credentials. In May 2011, he will finish his MAT and be certified to teach art, elementary and special education. In December 2011, I will finish my MA TESOL program and be certified to teach ESOL K-12 (and Im thinking of taking the certification exams for teaching elementary ed. too) I currently have a job teaching ESOL in the public schools because ESOL is such a high need area where we live.
Neither of us is thrilled about teaching here in the US for the upcoming school year.
Are there mid year placements at international / bilingual schools? When I graduate in December, what are our options? I need to decide now because I need to tell my school if I am continuing with them next year and he needs to decide if he should take a teaching job or not. Should we both take teaching jobs in the USA for the 2011-2012 school year just try for the 2012/13 school year?
Thank you!!!!! |

You are aware that the school year (K-12) in Thailand starts in MAY (with the exception of some of the "American" based schools).
95% of all jobs in the K-12 range (NOT including language academies) will hire in March-April for mid May classes and there are a few posted in Sept for the 2nd term (starts at the end of October).
If you are looking at a language academy to get your feet wet in the LOS and move to a school for the beginning of term then it won't really matter when you come although Dec-Mar is the slowest for ALL hiring.

Hi tttompatz,
Thanks for the reply. I wasnt aware of that the school year started in May for Thai schools. Do you think we would be over qualified for a language school or would it not matter?
Thanks!

As long as you meet the requirements (degree and passport from an anglophone country) and are willing to work for what they pay (30-40k baht per month per teacher with no additional benefits) they won't care about you being "over qualified".

Tttompatz, you know so much about teaching in Thailand! Im really thankful for you.
What do you think the chances are of finding a teaching position that pays 50-60,000 Baht per month in December/January?
Not a great chance, correct?
Would it be of any use to contact schools now?
Thanks!

your chances of finding a good paying job like that, right off the airplane are slim at best and near "0" in Dec./Jan (slowest time of the year).
If you want a decent international school job, start looking now and look at attending job fairs in your home country. You won't find them on an ESL website.
If you want to land, go to work and move up at your convenience then arrive here in April and be ready to go to work in May. You'll start at the low end of the scale (along with all the other ESL teachers) but start networking and it won't take long to move into something pretty nice.
