|

Hi guys,
I'm still on the job hunt and I came across a question about placement that I couldn't seem to find a direct answer to.
What should I do ::if:: I get a location that I am really unhappy about?
I heard that you can defer and wait to see if there will be a different location opening ... but I'm afraid that it would lower/eliminate my chances of a company wanting me (even if they have offered a job position).
Is it bad to defer? Is it better to suck it up and take the job even though I'm discontent??
In other words, what should I do if this ends up happening?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated. |

| Why would you not like a place? If it's dangerous, ok, or if it has some other negative effect on your health (allergies, for example). But if it's just too cold/hot, too urban/rural, too far from your existing friends, etc. I'd say if you choose to defer, you'll just be left behind in the dust with the other 99 applicants in line behind you taking up the spot. |

Thanks for the reply!
It was the danger part that I was really concerned about.
I thought that maybe people in the more "dangerous" areas may have left their positions leaving them open for new candidates like me.
I am planning to be committed once I get a position, but it concerns me that my health would be on the line.
I guess the company should understand my concerns if I defer it for this reason? |

It would probably depend a lot on where the placement you theoretically turn down is.
The thing is that people's current perception of the danger in different areas here is very individual and subjective. Plenty of people right now have the perception that Tokyo or anywhere in Tohoku (or even the entire country) is dangerous, but others might be quite happy to be sent there. Millions of people are going about their daily lives as normal in most of eastern Japan now, so companies are probably only going to be so tolerant of placements being turned down over quite possibly unfounded health concerns.
Unless you turn down a placement within about 50km of the power plant I'd say there will be people who will happily accept the job you didn't want, and the company may or may not think it is worthwhile keeping you on the list until a placement you are happy with comes up- hard to say really. |

It might be bad business decision making to send noobs to affected areas.

You either want to live in Japan or you don't. And you think Americans have healthier lifestyles than Japanese?

Why should they? Maybe they are actually rational human beings who are trying to do the best with what they have?
Have you thought about going to Japan and just trying to work where you want to be?

Man I WANT people to continue to be afraid for another 4 months. Shoot. I'll take a position in eastern, north eastern Kanto. I am not afraid of radiation at all. Er what I mean is.. OMG THE RADIATION IS SO BAD IN KANTO RIGHT NOW!! You had best get a job in Shikoku or Kyushu! Other wise you'll grow three heads and a tail!~! |
