Hello,
I've posted this question on other forums, but I figure this one would be the most professional of the bunch. I was just curious if it is possible for JETs to work another part time job with another large recognized company, like Geos or Aeon. I want to know before I accept my JET contract of alternative sources of income. I understand many JETs can do under the table work, but are there repercussions for taking on other (taxable) jobs? Possible worst case scenarios?
If anyone with experience in this matter could shed some light on the situation, it would be greatly appreciated. I apologise if this topic was covered in an earlier thread. |

I'd say post on bigdaikon.com and get the scoop from other JETs there.
I'd be surprised if you could get away with it easily.
If you try, you'll have to get special permission from immigration because eikaiwa work is not covered under the instructor visa you get as a JET ALT.

If you're thinking about doing this just to increase your income, yes, it will, but JET already pays more than most other entry level jobs, and you get Sat/Sun off.
So, you will be very tired.
You will have much less free time on your hands to enjoy the country.
If you're in a small rural town, it may be difficult to hide your spare job from students in the public school classes.
If you have never taught, why complicate things like this? |

I know that JET contracts typically don't allow people to do work other than as part of their job through JET. When you say that "many JETs can do under the table work", I think what you mean is "many JETs get away with doing under the table work". It's breach of contract, technically.
That said, I know in some places people get away with doing some private lessons on the side (or so I've read on sites like bigdaikon). In the prefecture where I was a JET, however, schools were very strict about this and I didn't know anyone who did privates - mostly because they didn't need to, and didn't want to get caught. I did know people who did volunteer work (myself included), or did occasional lessons in exchange for things like imported cheese and wine (because then they weren't being 'paid' per se).
Working as an actual employee of a company outside of your JET job will be a lot more noticeable to your JET employer and increase the risk of being caught violating your contract, not to mention it being outside of what your visa covers (as Glenski explained). |

Some contracting organizations look the other way, but know you are teaching privately on the side (like if there's a company in your small town and they go to the BoE and ask them to send them the ALT). Then, if somebody decides they don't like the colour of the flag on your passport or whatever, they can use it to get rid of you. You almost definitely wouldn't get fired over it, but they could tell you to stop, and then not recontract you. That's about it. Remember that most JET ALTs are in rural areas. There aren't a whole lot of secrets in rural areas, there aren't many foreigners to go to if you need English to be taught at your company, and there aren't many options for side work if you are a foreigner in a small town and there aren't companies that want to hire you. |

OP:
1. Your contract forbids you from taking on any outside employment.
2. You certainly won't be granted another visa(i.e. "Specialist in Humanities")to be able to work at an eikaiwa.
3. I suppose you could do privates out of your apartment but...
4. Good grief! You're on JET! Count your lucky stars and enjoy your free time! |

That's because you can't have 2 visas at the same time. Reread what I wrote; it's possible to get special permission to do work outside the range of one type of visa. Not guaranteed, but possible.

In a sense, I have already agreed with this thought in my earlier post. Might be interesting to know why the OP wants to do it... |
