When is the best time to look for university jobs in China?

When are the majority of jobs advertised?

Best time is right after the Spring Festival break; ie. now. If you are already in contract, 'tis the season of waibans pressuring for contract renewal.

BUt the salaries for Universities are half that of the language schools, right??

The salaries at most universities are half of those at training centers, but, you would work half the hours = basically the same.

I once worked for a well-known training center and was paid 14k, possibly 15k w/ bonus, per month back then. After taxes, rent, utilities and commuting costs I had around 9k, maybe 8.5k rmb, to spend per month.

I was in class 30 full hours a week. Toss in commuting, I spent approximately 50 hours per week somewhat devoted to the job. I could have lived closer and those hours would be less. Just say 40 hours.

I now walk 5 minutes to class and spend less than 15 hours per week devoted to the job, no nights or weekends and longer holidays for 7k to spend.

Basically the same, but, the one thing training centers offer is proximity to fun and dedicated students. Some colleges/universities are out in the boonies and have apathetic students.

No matter if it�s 5 or 10K RMB to spend each month, China with its punitive exchange rate is simply not the place to make cash to stake you in any Western country.
From 5RMB to the NZ dollar on up to 7+RMB for US and Oz dollars it is an uphill battle to pay off debt or do anything worthwhile.
The uni gigs with their 5K/m salaries permit a really nice lifestyle. If the uni is big enough, you will generally have another FT (or two) who has a similar schedule to yours.
A warm weekday afternoon when the mill bunnies are churning through the class hours, off you go to a leisurely lunch and a few beers to wash it down.
