Summer is fast approaching and I am thinking about taking a couple of months to go and teach elsewhere in Asia before coming back for the fall semester. Does anybody know about some type of summer camps in Japan, Korea or anywhere else for that matter?
Money is not a prime concern as my school continues to pay me over summer but it would be nice to make some money for a change
can you think of anything? |

A couple of years ago I was looking for short-term summer work. I don't recall seeing anything for Japan (Westgate does have short-term contracts, like 3 months or so, but I don't remember what the start and end dates were). Don't remember what Korea had. I do remember seeing several postings for China, which is where I ended up. If you're interested, you can PM me for more info. I went through a recruitment agency--a fairly reputable one.

edit: Although my school did pay me and cover my room & board, I lost money overall because of the airfare, which was not covered. |

DUH... denise is an idiot...
You mentioned in another post, and in fact it says so right by your username, that you're already in China...
Apologies for my, uh, thickness. And best of luck.

| Well, he wouldn't lose money on airfare that way. |

What is the norm here? for instance, I think if I was saying here on a contract for 12 months i.e. until the end of August, I would be EXPECTED to take some summer classes here at School.
As my contract ends in June and I am signing a new one at the end of August, I will not be getting paid for July and August, which is fine with me, but NEXT YEAR I will be staying here, or at least in China for the two month break.
If I stay in China, will I not be able to travel? Two of us are going "home" this time for the two months, but the third teacher here, who has only been here less than two months was told that he was expected to teach some summer classes during July and August. So, it seems to me that it is not actually a paid holiday if you are expected to teach. I think he had plans of going to do a Summer Camp elsewhere in China for the holidays (which effectively means he would be paid twice).
So, maybe I would be better off signing a 10 month contract again, so that come next July and August, I will be free to choose what I want to do - be it a summer camp elsewhere or travel or whatever.
I am due to sign my new contract next week, so I would like some advice please.
What does everyone else thing? Are you expected to take summer classes at your School? |

Ronda,
there seems to be no norms as far as china is concerned...it is just the luck of the draw: I signed a 12 months contract that covers Feb04 to Feb05 thus I am getting paid this summer much like the Chinese teachers for doing jack... .... Whe I asked the school if I was expected to remain on the premisces or in town, they said that I could do whatever I wanted....
Still seeking info for Japan and Korea... |
