How many here have dependents living with them in the ME? How is life for them? Do they have decent social/educational lives outside of the house/compound?
I also curious which countries would be best to look at if one has dependents.
I look forward to reading your experiences. Thanks.

This is impossible to answer because the situation is very different in different countries. It all depends on your credentials and thus your employer.

If you have an MA and related experience in university Academic English and can be hired in the Gulf, you will find mainly families and very good living conditions for the most part. Right now the instability of North Africa and the Levant means that you may not wish to take children into it. That leaves the Gulf where credentials are crucial for the jobs that provide good family benefits.

One pretty much only lives in a "compound" in some Saudi Arabia jobs and some of those are good and some are bad. Normally one lives in an employer provided flat (or paid with their allowance). Schools for the expat kids are expensive and you need to have the credentials to get one of the jobs that provide this benefit.

So, what are your credentials and what kind of job are you looking for...

Hello VS,
Thanks for the answer.
Actually, I'm not interested in a job in the ME at the moment, but after I finish my M.Ed. next year I might consider it.
I just think it's interesting to hear other people's experiences there. If I'm ever to look into going the ME route, I'd have to convince my wife that she can lead a somewhat normal life in the ME. I would suspect that parts of the UAE would probably be the most comfortable in that region for her, but I might be totally wrong.
So, information gathering...

Then why not google up some of the expat living sites of the Gulf. Most countries have them where they talk about life for the spouses and kiddies. Cool

I have looked up a couple, thanks. But since I'm an EFLer, and so are most here I thought there'd be some common ground. Cool

Your wife will not have a normal life in Saudi Arabia, perhaps the UAE or Oman might be somewhat closer to living a normal life, but remeber, if you come to the Middle East, you're not in Kansas anymore! Laughing

Kansas is not like 'home' to a lot of us non-septics either! Laughing
