Greetings from Saigon. Everything is going well here...my daily trials driving an old motor bike on the streets of Saigon...

- a word to the wise, watch out for buses, trucks, taxis, bicycles and pedestrians

- and don't forgot the sea of other motorbikes buzzing about in random chaos like a cloud of electrons.

Greetings from Saigon. Sometimes it's so hot here that you sweat salt and your hands get sunburned.

Greetings from Saigon. Every smile an invitation - every glance a lingering stare.

Greetings from Saigon. Every meal a gourmet dish - except for the local KFC where I recently got food poisoning.

Greetings from Saigon. Most all of the females have long hair - black and shiny.

Greetings from Saigon. The air is clean - any pollution carried out to sea.

Greetings from Saigon. We only drink beer here - with lots of ice.

Greetings from Saigon. A cornucopia of seafood - the other day I ate a small fish with more teeth than a barracuda.

Greetings from Saigon. So many bats - small brown ones and the large fruit bats - they revel playing chase in the night sky - and occasional crickets chirping.

Greetings from Saigon. The dogs all seem a bit timid and afraid.

Greetings from Saigon. Sometimes we eat fried silk worms - with onions and lemon grass - and lots of hot sauce - best served with cold beer.

Greetings from Saigon. In the distance I hear the huge temple drums announcing the hour.

Greetings from Saigon. Toi tịch Việt Nam - I like Vietnam! Anh yeu Viet Nam - I love Vietnam!

Just my .2 Dong because I've lived here for many years. Everyone's perception can be different. I understand this, but.....

Smiles in many cases are not an invitation, and it does not mean someone if friendly are pleased with you.

Rice with a few small pieces of chicken. Gourmet?

The air here in Saigon is tested frequently and it's very dangerous with high levels of benzene. Many expats have had to move because of the air pollution.

We'll see if you're here in a year. Saigon chews up and spits out a lot of people.

I know as well as anyone that SG is far from perfect - I was just trying to capture my feelings this afternoon. I'm married to a Vietnamese - we are settled here - own a home - I certainly hope that I don't get "chewed up" - we are here to stay. I had lived in Brazil before - VN shares many of the good qualities of Brazil without the extremely violent crime that plagues Brazil.

Despite my often negative comments about Vietnam, it DOES have a certain charm and allure that I find I am missing now I have left.
I DO believe many a passing smile IS in fact an invitation to treat.
One thing I miss a lot is hearing Viet mothers singing their babies to sleep in the countryside at night.

Theres a lot I DONT miss, but some things will stick in my mind as positive.

I forgot to mention the roosters - Saigon is full of them - they crow night & day - non-stop! At first an annoyance, but now I can't hear them - my brain turned them off!

An excellent meal! Maybe that explains why.
