I am an experienced, certified teacher looking for a job in Thailand, I want to be somewhere off the beaten path (as much as possible) and money is less the issue than hours, so far everything I have seen is really contact hour heavy, any advice on places to look?

Hello,

It is nice to hear that there are still people interested in teaching, and the principles thereof, and not overly concerned with making money. South East Asia is a perfect spot for this type of `make a difference in a childs life` type of teaching.

There are so many options out there for you to do this type of teaching in Thailand. It is hard to give you a starting point. Many organizations teach children in straw huts in the middle of the jungle in both the Northern and Southern parts of Thailand. They provide a roof for your head and food, not much in the way of money.

I would recommend that you search the Internet for some leads. Otherwise go to Thailand. Get a hotel off of Sukhumvit for about 500baht a night, grab the Bangkok post, make some calls... ask around, and go and enrich someones life.

My hats off to you!

I dont mean to sound cynical, but the majority of Thai people are much better off than their poorer neighbours. The Vietnamese, Cambodians, Lao and Burmese people would love to have someone to help them, change their lives for the better. Thailand is a rich enough Country to look after its own peoples needs.

If you like Thailand, but want to help genuine poorer people, try Teaching at the Refugee Camps amoung the Burma/Thailand borders. Alternatively
the Lao refugee centers.

Great news, I am not hooked into Thailand, though will sheepishly stay away from Vietnam until this SARS stufff is cleared up (assuming I dont end up in China in the first place).

I am thinking about just heading out there to find work, I guess I am a little afraid of not deciding to work, and just blowing my whole wad (which isn't so much inthe first place...)

Will keep looking, any suggestions on destinatins (in Thailand or out?)

If you are interested in working with Burmese refugees head to Chiang Mai, Mae Hong Son or Tak. Just get in touch with some NGOs operating in the area and start networking. You will probably find something.

As far as Thailand being well off compared to other parts of asia I have to disagree to a certain extent. If you go to the north-eastern parts of Thailand you will see that they are just as poor as the surrounding countries (maybe not including Cambodia). For more information I suggest you visit http://www.tithailand.com/cgi-bin/ikonboard.cgi?

Good Luck

I agree with Taiwan boy completely, contact the NGOs in the areas your interested in. Consider heading out to a provincial town like "Amphur Prao" north of Chiang Mai and stay in the area for a while. Contact the local schools or the local politicans, the Wats (monks in the area). There is always work but you have to be patient, flexible and willing to be always professional.

MOD EDIT

Also contact the staff at Chiang Mai University Language Institute as they always have great network contacts and refferals.

good luck.
