Advice please: I have a friend who has just been offered a job in the University of Ha'il - any info with regards to ALL aspects of the job/life there appreciated.
Without knowing much about it, my first instinct was to scream...NO DON'T DO IT! She is single with BA + CELTA, a little experience, no sure exactly how much, will check.
Can't get onto the Saudi forum.
Thanks guys

Hi Meyanga,
Your friend needs to know that Hail is a very conservative place - yes, even by Saudi standards. I've never been there, but according to people who have, Riyadh seems like Paris by comparison.
As for the job, I know people who worked in Hail uni a few years back, and they spoke of it in very negative terms. It may have changed since then - again, it would be good if we could get someone with current experience of the place to comment.
In any case, I always advise single women with no ME experience to only consider jobs in the three major urban centres of Riyadh, Jeddah or Al Khobar. It's likely that your friend would feel very isolated and 'culture shocked' in Hail or any other provincial town. Since she doesn't have an MA or much experience, her chances of getting a job with one of the better employers might be slim, but I suggest she look around before accepting the Hail offer.
If you want to discuss this further... feel free to PM me! |

Just curious, but why not go? Is it because you'd have to stay on the compound? |

Compound or not compound is likely not the issue here. Compound living is the norm in many parts of Saudi, and there will be just as many who prefer them as not... depending on the compound facilities.
If you want to know all the reasons, go ahead and do a search for this place. But, I didn't think you were applying to Saudi at the moment anyway.
