I will be honest my cup of tea is teaching college students. I have an M.A. in TESOL/French, and a high school teaching certificate. I've taught in Korea at private academies and found the students to be fine. My only experience teaching high school was at an inner city school; I cannot deal with students and classroom management was very difficult for me in such an atmosphere. I do not know the culture of the UAE, but I can converse in Arabic and would know what the students are saying. |

Unruly, wild, distracted, entitled.
Nothing like students in East Asia.
I was aghast to see teachers driving students down a corridor like so many wild asses with a cat-o-nine tails type whip at one High School in Abu Dhabi.
I wouldn't think this is your cup of tea.

Students in the UAE are probably more like the inner city kids than Koreans to be honest.
If you have an MA, apply directly to the universities via their web sites.

Thanks, I would rather teach at a Korean university or one from the Emirates. I will look up the universities and see what I can find. Zayed University had zero openings. I want to have a good experience teaching. |

Most of the best jobs for next academic year are likely filled... or at least offer letters have gone out. Then they have to wait to see how many of them show up. You will also find that many of them insist on 2-3 years post MA experience. Since you already know Korea, it might be your best option at the moment.

Some days I feel like a shepherd trying to get students into class.
I taught in South Korea and the students in SK are nothing like the students in the UAE. I remember students would start school at 7 and finish at 3 then go to an Hagwon for more practice then leave at about 10. They would go home and do their homework and do it all over the next day. Then on the weekends students would learn how to play a musical instrument. They were overworked.
I can't imagine students in the UAE doing what the Koreans are doing.

Is anyone currently teaching with ADEC on here or has done so? How did you like your job overall in terms of job satisfaction? I don't expect students to be like Korean students, of course. There is going to be a major difference. I just want to know what I am going to possibly deal with. In the meantime, I am still hoping my M.A. in TESOL can me land a college position somewhere. If anyone has any ideas of where to look, let me know. I have been looking high and low and look on Dave's, too. |

JohnRambo,
I don't work for ADEC but I do teach in a government high school in the UAE and let me tell you they are pretty much all the same.
When I first came to the UAE I thought I was going to change the education system. That quickly changed because many people drag you down with their negativity. There are good days and bad days! I go in do what I have to do and go home. The salary and benefits help a lot because I wouldn't be earning what I do here back home.
Remember, do your job, change the students/people that want it and go home! Set yourself a goal, whether it is buying a house or just plain old saving!

We don't have many regular posters from ADEC pass through here because most of them are not EFL teachers. Have you tried their Facebook page?

You can also try Teach Away's facebook page. They hire many teachers for ADEC, and there are many posts about ADEC experiences there. |
