Hi,

My partner and I have recently accepted teaching jobs in Samsun, Turkey. We've never been to Turkey and are interested if anyone has any information on what it's like to live and teach on the northern coast.

We will be working for a company called OxfordVision. If anyone has any information about working for them, that would be greatly appreciated as well.

Thanks so much,
Kelsey

I didn't teach in Samsun but I did live there for the best part of a year. It depends what you want out of your time in Turkey. If you want a really authentic experience, are willing to learn Turkish quickly and are happy to live simply you could enjoy it. However, if you need entertainment it does not have much to offer despite being a university city.

There are very few foreigners there and it is quite conservative, although not as much as other Black Sea towns.

The main disadvantage is that it is far from other places, once you have done day trips to Sinop, Amasya and neighbouring small towns you may get bored. There is an airport so you could fly to Istanbul for a weekend but the costs add up.

Some foreigners enjoy Samsun but plenty don't.
