Greetings,

I'm living in Malaysia on a work visa. It's good for another 2 years. Next month, I'm going to begin studying at a local university. They have sent me info about how to get a student visa. Given that I'm lawfully employed here, do I need to do any extra immigration paperwork to study here? Or am I fine as I'm already here lawfully, and the student visa paperwork is only for people who are coming here fresh?

Any help anyone can offer on this issue would be greatly appreciated.

And in case you're wondering, "hey, why can't you just call up the school, ask them a simple question, and get a simple answer," well....you and me both....

Good question.

The school probably sent you info on obtaining a student visa because whoever read your application passed on instructions to an underling to send you all relevant information and that included info regarding student visas. You can study on a work permit; I did so for my MBA while still working.

If you do go for a student visa, it allows for part-time work only (20 hours a week), so you are better off with the full-time work permit as long as you have full-time employment.

do yourselves a favour and do not be lured into teaching in corrupt language schools in Kuala Lumpur you will lose out when dealing with some of these chancers

remember it is very easy to lie in job descriptions and if you do not get a work permit you will be considerd illegal go for jobs that can be checked and verified and where you will be treated fairly otherwise you are just throwing money away on flights and deposits on apartments as the school owners do a deal with landlords to rip you off etc,

take care and respect yourself as these sheisters wont.

thank you
